Diversity and Equality in Social and Health Care

Diversity and Equality in Social and Health Care

Sample Answer

Diversity and Equality in Social and Health Care

Diversity and equality are critical components of social and medical care. Practices that promote diversity and equality ensure that services are accessible and fair to all. Equality implies that everyone has equal access to opportunities regardless of lifestyle, abilities, or background. The act of appreciating differences between people and respecting their culture, lifestyles, values, and beliefs is referred to as diversity (Thompson 2016). Promoting diversity and equality in health and social care settings primarily aids in the prevention of discrimination. Discrimination against a patient can be direct or indirect, and it can occur unintentionally due to vulnerabilities such as age, health, or disability. The purpose of this paper is to identify a discriminatory case scenario and explain how advocacy and empowerment were used to correct it.

In a hospital, I worked as an intern. A patient came to see me about her health. Following a series of tests, she was informed that she would require surgery. Because there were some risks involved in the process, she was required to sign a document as proof of her consent. She had a learning disability and couldn’t understand the material. Nobody bothered to explain it to her. She was disadvantaged because she did not provide informed consent, depriving her of her right. The healthcare practitioner would have made reasonable adjustments, such as providing a detailed explanation to the patient. She later returned to the waiting room, looking perplexed. I noticed the woman being so retrenched while doing my rounds and went to talk to her. When I realized what she was worried about, I took her back to the healthcare providers who were in charge of her paperwork.

I educated my colleagues on the significance of equality and diversity in healthcare delivery. According to the Equality Act of 2010 and the Care Act of 2014, it was illegal to treat someone differently (Oliver, 2017). These acts have provided protection against discriminatory practices and have given disabled people a voice in society. It was critical that they understood that the patient should always be at the center of their service and that the patient’s needs were their top priority. Discrimination also violates the ethics code, which is based on four principles: justice, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and autonomy (Rowe, 2017). A person with a disability, like everyone else, has the right to communicate and receive information. The patient had the right to understand the risks and benefits of the procedure, as well as the assurance that she was safe. It was also critical that healthcare providers worked to support the patient’s expression of preferences and needs. I sat down with the patient and went over the consent form with her, explaining each detail and asking if she understood because communication with patients with learning disabilities needed to be interactive. This interaction served as an empowerment tool, making the patient feel included and important (Thompson, 2016). She was involved in making health-related decisions, which should be encouraged to boost their self-esteem and participation.

Conclusion

Healthcare practitioners may make unintentional discrimination, but willful blindness and ignorance are not excuses. Discrimination is a major cause of health deterioration among individuals, not just the disabled. Anti-discriminatory practices must therefore be promoted in order to encourage healthy living through the role of practice codes, legislation, and working procedures.
