According to Healthy People 2020, improving Adolescent Health is a major goal and includes healthy development, well-being, safety, and health of young adults and adolescents. Healthy People 2020 also notes that although young adults and adolescents are often healthy during this time in their life, nonetheless, they engage in some activities that risk their well-being. Some of the risks mentioned include substance abuse and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

While on my practicum at the healthcare facility, I came across a 15-year-old girl and soon-to-be mother of two. The patient had brought in her 17-month-old son, who had a boil on his lower left thigh. The young girl looked like she was not in touch with reality, and her mind seemed far off. While talking to her, I learned that she had dropped out of school after her first pregnancy and was currently residing at her mother’s house after the father of her second child abandoned her. What shocked me and saddened me at the same time was that this was her third pregnancy. Her second child was born prematurely and later died. I was reeling with a mixture of emotions, looking at this young mother whose future looked bleak.

It is one thing to learn about the importance of adolescent sexual education. It’s another to see it put into practice. Whatever is taught in class does not necessarily translate into real life. Adolescents need to be taught the need to practice safe sex if they really have to engage in it in the first place, and also taught on the practicalities that come with the reality of early parenthood. It may be cool to have a sexual partner, but there is nothing cool about being a school dropout and a mother of two at 15 years. That said, I believe that in trying to meet the Healthy People 2020 goals, adolescents who are living the consequences of risky sexual behavior should be involved in educating those that are on the same road to destruction, on the realities, consequences, and dangers of uninhibited sexual behavior.
