Adolescents risk acquiring STIs for several reasons, such as limited access to regular health care and the fact that their physiology increases their infection susceptibility. Approximately 1 teen out of every 4 contracts an STD every year. Further sexual activity can result in unwanted pregnancies, an outcome that meets tend unprepared financially, emotionally, and physically. In the US, the youth are at risk of STIs and unplanned pregnancies, and this is more so for youth in Florida.

Risky sexual behavior can result in a myriad of problems, including teen pregnancies, school truancy ad dropping out, drug and alcohol abuse, and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Secondary consequences include an increase in crime, a decline in population literacy, an increase in poverty levels, and an increase in taxpayer burdens in the form of prison system funding and food stamps for the poor and homeless. The policies and structural barriers do not support the young person’s right to medically accurate, honest services and information. Youth in Florida are more likely than in any other state to experience STI, HIV, and AIDS diagnoses. Health equity, comprehensive sexual education, and access to contraceptives are necessary for the safety and health of Middle and High School students, the target population of this study (CDC, 2016).

Problem Statement

According to the CDC (2019), risky behaviors among high school students in the state of Florida scored higher than the national scores in the following categories where youth reported that they:  did not use birth control pills prior to engaging in sexual intercourse, did not use an IUD, birth control pills, implant, or shot, patch or ring prior to their last intercourse; did not use a condom during the last sexual intercourse.


The question that needs to be addressed is why the youth, specifically those in Middle and High School, engage in risky sexual behavior. Once this is determined, the second part of the project will assess which intervention the youth are likely to adhere to based on their own feedback; thus, the participants will be asked: what interventions do you feel will help you stop risky sexual behavior?


Pre-intervention data will be collected using a questionnaire. The questionnaire will be administered via the target school and preceded by request to participate in the research. The information on the questionnaire will help in improving the final questionnaire that will be administered in the final research. Students who are currently engaging in sexual activity will be invited to participate. Also, the students will be asked to add any other relevant information they feel needs to be addressed as regards their risky sexual behaviors.

The main intervention is creating a focus group within the school that will allow for students to meet and express themselves. The focus group setup will be a place where students will be free to express their fears, anxieties, losses, and any other relevant views as regards their sexual activity.  Having a channel to express themselves without fear of judgment and disgrace and having others listen and empathize may prove very therapeutic. The focus group will comprise peers and the facilitators who will work. This will help the students feel free to express themselves without feeling intimidated by a psychologist, teachers, or parents. The students, it is hoped, will view the focus group as a place where friends meet and discuss their secret fears, ideas, and thoughts, among others.

The intervention will begin in the course of the project. Initially, it will run for approximately 5 weeks, at which time the students will meet and discuss their thoughts and feelings. This time duration will allow for awkwardness to be dealt with, and hopefully, by the third week, students will feel confident and free enough to talk about their struggles. The success or failure will be determined at the end of the five weeks when the students will be requested to fill in a questionnaire to determine their satisfaction with the five-week exercise.

The data collected from the project participants will be analyzed using SPSS. The first questionnaire administered will determine (using a Likert Scale) why the youth engage in risky sexual behavior prior to the intervention. The frequency of risky sexual behavior was determined after the intervention through a questionnaire administered to the participants. The difference between the two data sets will determine whether the intervention was successful.

Time Table

The project will start with the pre-intervention phase, which will take at least 5 weeks (March 1st to April 4th, 2021). This phase will include refining the final questionnaire. In the third week of the pre-intervention, recruitment of project participants will begin, and by April 5th 2021, the first questionnaire will be administered to the final project participants. The project will run for 6 weeks and end tentatively on May 10th, 2021.

The objective will be to determine the effectiveness of the intervention in risky sexual behaviors. The dates are not fixed and will allow room for minor adjustments. As with any project, unforeseen circumstances that can delay the progress of the project need to be considered and every possible loophole mitigated before the delays jeopardize the entire project. Lastly, regular updates will be given every alternate day up to three times a week. This information will be disseminated through internal memos, and social media groups created specifically for this project.
