Nurses as Change Agents in the Community

Nurses as Change Agents in the Community

Sample Answer

Nurses as Change Agents in the Community

Nurses have traditionally played the healthcare advocacy role by serving as agents or forces of change in healthcare settings and the community, particularly in public health. As stated by Mason et al. (2020), community-based institutions are today playing a fundamental role in promoting and transforming communities by proposing solutions that primarily focus on social determinants of health, such as working conditions, literacy and education, social support networks, income, and poverty, physical environments, coping skills and personal health, and many others. In this case, I would briefly describe at least two factors that would facilitate and hinder the development of community walkways in case a community-led team identifies a lack of access to exercise facilities as an issue of public concern.

The first factor that would facilitate the creation of walkways in the community is the relevant authority’s readiness and willingness to participate in the project. The local authority, state government, or federal government must be willing to take part in the project for the idea or proposal to come to fruition.  Secondly, there must be enough facts on the ground to support the course of action. This simply implies that there must be evidence and data to substantiate or explain why walkways must be developed. Such data might include high cases of accidents. On the other hand, one factor that might hinder the building of the walkways is the lack of funding.  The relevant authorities might be willing to create the alleyways, but funds might be limited. The other obstacle is a lack of the required expertise to undertake the project. However, the team can overcome the first hurdle by pushing Congress to allocate funds to the project through a policy amendment. The second obstacle can be addressed by advertising the job description to attract individuals (or contractors) with the right pedigree and skills.

Nurses as Change Agents in the Community

In Chapter 84, “How Community-Based Organizations Are Addressing Nursing’s Role in Transforming Health Care,” the authors describe the community as the focus of advocacy action for change. They list a series of questions that help community teams develop organizing principles to guide their interventions, and the aim is to attack social determinants of health to make community change. Suppose a community team identifies lack of access to exercise modalities as a public health issue. If the team were to determine that pedestrian walkways need to be constructed:
