Advanced Care Planning and Analysis

Palin’s quote was simply a scare tactic to oppose the health care reforms planned by the Democrats. According to her, the Democrats were planning to refuse to pay for health care, thus reducing the costs of health care. This was just a scare tactic which was not true since there was no panel to determine whether an individual was worthy of health care by judging his level of productivity. The health bill was instead beneficial to the American citizens as it would have allowed them to discuss end-of-life issues with their doctors.

Sarah Palin’s quote is considered a scare tactic that arises from her loyalty to her political party. She used the quote to sway her supporters to oppose the health care bill proposed by the democrats. According to her, her supporters would agree with her on the Democrats being interested in reducing health care costs. This is common even in different countries across the world, as political leaders from opposing political parties can come up with false and scary quotes to gain more support for their parties (Mason et al., 2020). Therefore, Palin’s loyalty to her political party made her come up with such a quote.

It is right for nurses to endorse health reform legislation even if the legislation is not perfect. Even though legislation may not be perfect, it may favor a large group of people more than it negatively affects a small group of people. Since nurses are required to be advocates, it is not wrong for them to endorse such health reform legislation. However, in endorsing such legislation, they should ensure that they are speaking out for the common good.

This applies to the recently failed American Health Care Act. The issue is who should pay for it and not universal health coverage. Although the bill failed, it was likely to increase health insurance coverage for more Americans. Nurses would still be required to endorse the bill since it would have advanced the best interests of the patients they serve by increasing access to health care.

Advanced Care Planning and Analysis

Read the section titled “Reflective Practice: Pants on Fire” (See attached pg. 4-5) from the chapter “Health Policy, Politics, and Professional Ethics” and address the questions below.

  1. How do you judge Palin’s quote below, as an effective strategy to oppose Democrats’ plans for health care reform or unethical scaremongering?
    • “And who will suffer the most when they ration care? The sick, the elderly, and the disabled, of course. The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s death panel so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their level of productivity in society, whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil.”
  2. Reflect on what informs your judgment: commitment to advance care planning, analysis of facts, and/or political party loyalties.
  3. Is it right for nurses to endorse health reform legislation even if the legislation is not perfect?
  4. Does this apply to the recently failed American Health Care Act?
