Week 1 Discussion

The morning briefing of February 16th by Graham (2021) discussed the issue of family caregivers and their request to be vaccinated against the Corona Virus and covered three areas of this discussion. According to the article, approximately 53 million Americans care for the elderly and/or sickly loved ones at home. Of these, close to a third spend at least 21 hours a week helping people with disabilities in household tasks, personal care, and nursing activities such as administering oxygen, injections and tending to wounds, among other duties. Again, close to 40 percent administer high-intensity care, which involves time-consuming and complicated caregiving demands. The risk lies in the vulnerability of these caregivers and the subsequent vulnerability of the patients they care for. If this population were to get ill, they would likely infest that hat they care for, and the pandemic would only worsen. Thus, the need to include this category of caregivers is a paramount failure to which the vaccination program will prove to be futile. Also, if the caregivers were to become sick, the patients would be forced to be enrolled in homes, thus overwhelming the nursing homes and assisted living services; and set another crisis in motion.

Politics and politicians: The current directive asserts that persons aged 65 years above and healthcare workers are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccination. This means that persons who care for their elderly loved ones at home but fail to meet the age criteria are exempted from the vaccine. It is a risky place to be as these home caregivers expose their loved ones to the virus. Access to health care: The vaccine, as mentioned before, is not available for the caregivers taking care of their elderly sick kin.

Health care legislation: In some states, such as Arizona, the government is trying to look into the issue of vaccinating caregivers who accompany the elderly patients to vaccination centers. In other states, family caregivers have been moved to the highest vaccination tier-1a- of the rollout. North Carolina, for example, has moved family caregivers to vulnerable and medically fragile children to the priority tier, while Illinois has done the same for family caregivers taking care of persons of all ages who have significant disabilities. Additionally, the Department of Veteran Affairs announced its plans for persons taking part in the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers. In the plan, family caregivers to veterans with serious injuries get a financial stipend but get vaccinated only when the veteran becomes eligible.
