Week 4-Discussion-COVID-19 Policy

Thank you for sharing your post. When COVID-19 struck, it took healthcare by surprise as no one thought it would explode to such magnitude. Healthcare leaders were more on a trial-and-error basis when it came to reversing and curtailing the spread of the disease. The nurse leader at your workplace did a commendable and brave thing. She thought out of the box by suggesting that triage be moved outside of its normal area. Although her idea was rejected, I believe she made the suggestion in good faith.

Nurse leadership is among the single most significant factors that motivate and inspire nurses to practice at the peak of their mandate. A nurse leader, as described by the American Nursing Association, is one whose interest is in excelling in the professional path, a leader in a healthcare facility who represents the nursing profession’s interests, a seasoned healthcare administrator, or a nurse who is interested in refining their skills to differentiate self from the competition or to move to the next leadership level (Dyess et al., 2016). Nursing management and leadership are successful when the team is successful. Team buy-in is necessary for any project or decision made to be successful, as was seen in the case you mentioned (Dempsey & Assi, 2018). However, while the definition of nursing leadership includes qualities such as supportive, inspirational, and encouraging, for nursing to be absolutely successful, it needs to be equipped to evolve with an evolving industry. The industry is going through tremendous changes, as observed during the COVID-19 pandemic; nursing leadership needs to be as malleable in keeping and adapting to these changes. That said, nurse leaders, besides possessing the desired skills for leadership, must act as role models and adapt leadership styles that enhance team cohesion, improve service delivery, enhance patient outcomes, minimize medical errors, and generally benefit the entire workplace.

Week 4-Discussion-COVID-19 Policy

Healthcare is an evolving industry in which certain health policies are ever changing as well. The nurses are always on the front line with patient’s, but they’re also on front when it comes to health policies which benefit either patient’s or the community. Due to the recent pandemic COVID-19, there has been multiple changes in various policies at our organization. The first case of COVID-19 was detected in Snohomish County, Washington State, on January 20, 2020 (Holshue., 2020). This frightened a lot of health organizations since not much guidance was provided by local health authorities to prevent the spread of the virus nor from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Therefore, the nurse leader stepped forward to speak with our management on COVID-19 prevention measures.

In the beginning of March 2020 one of our nurse leader proposed several ideas about prevention, but they were all rejected. For example, Registered Nurse triage patient’s outside only and not bring them in the clinic, but this was rejected from the management. Because of staffing and billing concerns. Then the nurse leader talked amongst with care management team, and the lead physician regarding proposing hiring designated staff at a separate respiratory clinic only. In addition, provided rationale behind the interventions which is to prevent COVID-19 amongst others. This proposal was approved by the management. Although, it took an involvement of interdisciplinary team members for the leader to succeed. In this example, the nurse leader acted as a role model and a coach the other members of the healthcare to make a positive difference (Patton, Zalon, & Ludwick, 2019).

Consequently, nurse leaders provide advocacy in policies within organization. Because health policies do not only provide protect patient’s, but also the staff. Although, there are many barriers come between policy maker and management, but sometimes with the support of key players, this can help make an impact.
