Type 1 and 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Type 1 and 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Sample Answer

Type 1 and 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus (DM) refers to a metabolic condition characterized by the inability of the body to metabolize glucose sufficiently. According to the National Center for Health Statistics report, nearly 11.7 percent of adult cases of diabetes are linked to Type 1 DM. Diabetes mellitus is classified into two: type 1 and type 2. Type 1 DM occurs due to the damage to the beta cells found in the pancreas by the body’s immune system. This condition accounts for nearly 5-10 percent of all American cases of diabetes. On the other hand, Type 2 is caused by environmental and lifestyle factors – which contribute to the accumulation of extra fats, especially in the abdominal section. Another modifiable risk factor for this type of diabetes is physical inactivity. According to Nix (2017), Type 2 DM accounts for nearly 90-95 percent of all cases of diabetes. Genomic research has also established a direct link between several genetic factors and Type 2 DM as well as obesity. Unlike Type 1 DM, Type 2 DM tends to arise from the body’s resistance to insulin due to defects in its genetic makeup.

Since it is a genetic and lifestyle disease, certain populations are highly predisposed to Type 2 DM than others. High-risk groups include overweight people (those with a BMI greater than 25), physically inactive individuals, those people having diabetic first-degree relatives, women with a past of gestational diabetes, those with hypertension (greater than 140/90 mm Hg), older adults (aged 45 and over), as well as those with a history of cardiovascular disease (Nix, 2017). Ethnicity/ race is also a risk factor, with Pacific Islanders, Asian Americans, Native Americans, Latinos, and Blacks bearing the highest risk. Finally, the term “adult-onset diabetes” was changed to Type 2 DM because scientists discovered that the disease was also prevalent among children as opposed to the previous assumption that it only affected adults aged 40 and above.
