Nutrition Intervention for Patients with Cancer

Nutrition Intervention for Patients with Cancer

Sample Answer

Nutrition Intervention for Patients with Cancer

Assignment Worksheet:

  • What are the main objectives in nutrition intervention for cancer patients?

[Weight loss in cancer patients is an indicator of a prognosis that is poor. The nutritional status of a patient is jeopardized by the progression of the disease. Nutritional status begins to alter during the diagnosis and goes on to the treatment and patient recovery. The management of a cancer patient requires optimal nutritional status. Thus, nutritional therapy’s main goals include maximizing the quality of life; aiding in healing and recovery; protecting the immune function while decreasing infection risk; maintaining energy and strength; minimizing complications and effects that are nutrition-related; helping the patient to tolerate treatment better; preventing or reversing nutrient deficiencies; and preservation of a lean body mass (McIntosh, 2016).]

  • What are Mr. Palmer’s protein and energy requirements? What are his fluid requirements? Please calculate the nutrient needs for protein, calories, and fluid for Mr. Palmer!

[According to Caccialanza et al. (2016), the caloric requirement for adults with cancer is between 25 to 30 calories per day for every 2.2 pounds of body weight. Mr. Palmer is 165 lbs; therefore, he requires 1,875-2,250 calories per day. Protein recommendations are 1.2-1.5 grams per 2.2 pounds. Hence Mr. Palmer will require 90-112.5g of protein per day. He will also require 1-ounces glasses of fluid (caffeine-free)]

  • List 3 dietary suggestions to address decreased appetite and nausea.
    1. The patient should be given 8 small snacks and meals every day. The food should be presented in pleasant settings, and the patient should have some company while eating.
    2. Cool juices and drinks should be kept within reach of the patient. Additionally, he should be offered liquid meals, milkshakes, and fruit smoothies when he has no appetite.
    3. The patient should be offered food that is starchy such as potatoes, bread, or pasta, as well as high-protein foods, such as chicken and fish. If the patient is bothered by the smell of food, he should be served bland foods that are cold or at room temperature.
  • List 3 dietary suggestions to address dry mouth (xerostomia).
    1. Eating food that is moist and soft and which is at room temperature or cool.
    2. Food should be moistened with milk, butter, sauces, or broth.
    3. Sugary or sticky food and drinks should be avoided (Hanchanale et al., 2015).
