Over recent years, there has been a rapid rise in the population of people on earth. The rapid population growth has led to more pressure on the global environment. This has threatened the global climate’s ability to supply sufficient fuel, water, food, and a quality environment. Several human activities, such as deforestation and the use of fossil fuels, have increased the levels of carbon IV oxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The expected global warming will generally lead to a rise in temperatures, a decrease in rainfall, and water availability for crops. This paper gives an overview of the influence of population growth on global warming. The first section focuses on a brief background of greenhouse gases and how they contribute to global warming. The second section describes how gases cause problems for developing countries. In the section, there is a discussion of the economic, security, and political problems caused by the emission of greenhouse gases. Finally, the third section discusses the causes of the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and how this emission can be reduced. The causes of the emission of greenhouse gases that are mainly focused on are the use of fossil fuels and deforestation. Throughout the paper, the discussion is based on the issue of global warming in Nigeria. In 2017, the country had a population of 190 million people, and it is expected to contribute to at least 10% of the earth’s population by 2050. A large number of people in Nigeria depend on agriculture and use crude oil resources. This has led to an increase in the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. However, the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere can be reduced by the adoption of green technology and through the massive planting of trees.

Section I. Background

A greenhouse gas is any gas in the atmosphere that can trap and hold heat in the atmosphere by absorbing infrared radiation. The most significant greenhouse gases are nitrous oxide, methane, carbon IV oxide, and water vapor. Even though the second most abundant gas in the atmosphere is oxygen, it has been found to contribute little to global warming since it does not absorb infrared radiation. Chlorofluorocarbons, which were used as aerosol propellants and refrigerants, are also greenhouse gases. Industrial processes create fluorinated gases such as sulfur hexafluoride, perfluorocarbons, and hydrofluorocarbons, which are also regarded as greenhouse gases. All greenhouse gases are associated with global warming.

Greenhouse gases mainly cause global warming by absorbing infrared radiation. The visible wavelengths from the sun reach the earth easily by passing through the atmosphere. About 51% of the sunlight is absorbed by vegetation, water, and land on the earth’s surface (Kweku et al., 2018). However, some of the energy is emitted in the form of infrared radiation back from the surface of the earth. The longer wavelengths of the infrared radiation emitted from the surface of the earth are absorbed by greenhouse gases such as carbon IV oxide, water vapor, and other trace gases. These gases then emit infrared radiation in all directions. As a result, the second source of radiation is created, which warms the atmosphere of the earth. This makes the earth to be warmer than usual. The temperatures in the atmosphere of the earth increase as the concentration of greenhouse gases increases. This implies that a higher concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere leads to more absorption of infrared radiation, which is emitted towards the surface of the earth, leading to higher temperatures in the earth’s atmosphere. Since greenhouse gases are mainly produced by human activities, a higher population of people on earth leads to a higher production of greenhouse gases, which leads to global warming.

Section II. How Emissions Cause Problems for the Developing World

Greenhouse gases are mainly produced by developed countries across the world. This is because developed countries are the main consumers of fossil fuels. The United States, for instance, contributes approximately 25% of the carbon IV oxide gas emitted into the atmosphere. Even though developed countries are currently experiencing a dropping or stagnant population growth rate, industrializing developed nations are experiencing a rapid population growth rate. Developed countries such as China, which are experiencing rapid industrialization and population growth, simultaneously are the major producers of greenhouse gases. Therefore, population growth accompanied by increased industrialization has made developed countries such as China contribute significantly to the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

The emission of greenhouse gases hurts the economic productivity of any country. For countries whose economy heavily relies on the agricultural sector, like Nigeria, the production of food is likely to go down. This is because greenhouse gases lead to global warming, which has led to climate change in recent years. Climate change is associated with unpredictable rainy seasons. This can lead to a decrease in food production in areas with no irrigation systems. In Nigeria, there have been delays in the commencement of agricultural activities in the southern part of the country due to delays in the rainfall season. This has affected food production in the country.

Moreover, the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere causes security challenges. Greenhouse gases cause climate change, which results in several security challenges for people. Flooding, which results from climate change, causes the displacement of people, making them homeless. In a country like Nigeria, which has rebel groups, the homeless people living in camps are likely to be attacked by such rebel groups. Therefore, people displaced due to climate change should be protected by the government against such attacks.

Greenhouse gases also cause various political challenges to nations. The political effects of greenhouse gases mainly arise from the policies that have to be implemented to control climate change. Several policies have been legislated in Nigeria to control climate change. For instance, in 2013, the Federal Executive Council adopted the National Policy on Climate Change (Ogbuabor & Egwuchukwu, 2017). One negative impact that arises from the adoption of policies on climate change is the fact that political restructuring is necessary for these policies to be implemented. This easily results in political conflicts during the restructuring process.

Section III. Causes and Solutions for Greenhouse Gases

One of the major causes of the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is deforestation. Trees are important in reducing levels of carbon IV oxide in the atmosphere since they use it during photosynthesis. Although plants emit carbon IV oxide during respiration, it is smaller than those taken during photosynthesis. Plants, therefore, store the surplus carbon and use it for growth. However, plants release carbon IV oxide into the air when they are cut down and allowed to rot or burn. This leads to the accumulation of carbon IV in the atmosphere. The accumulation of carbon IV oxide in the atmosphere in Nigeria is significantly caused by deforestation. The engagement of Nigerian citizens in clearing forests for charcoal, firewood, and agriculture leads to land-use emissions, which account for 39% of carbon IV oxide emissions in the country. Most Nigerians clear forests to create land for agricultural activities. By doing so, they contribute to deforestation leading to an increase in the accumulation of fossil fuels in the atmosphere.

Besides, greenhouse gases can also be produced from burning fossil fuels. The combustion of fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and natural gas leads to the emission of greenhouse gases, including carbon IV oxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. Carbon IV oxide is the main greenhouse gas produced from burning fossil fuels. Nigeria is one of the developing countries where fossil fuel combustion contributes to greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. The country is one of the world’s major oil producers; fossil fuels contribute to approximately 33% of the greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere (Olajide et al., 2018). Therefore, the emission of greenhouse gases in the country can be reduced through the use of regulations restricting the use of fossil fuels.

One way of reducing the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere is by coming up with policies that promote green technology. This can help reduce the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels. Green growth can be encouraged by using alternative forms of energy, such as solar power and hydropower, instead of energy from fossil fuels. Nigeria is currently planning to increase its supply of renewable energy to 36% by 2030 (Onyia, 2015). It is currently adopting the use of hydropower to generate electricity by constructing dams such as the 3000MW Mambila Dam. This will help in reducing the use of fossil fuels.

Planting trees to reduce the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere resulting from deforestation is necessary. Planting trees will help reduce the levels of carbon IV oxide in the atmosphere since plants take in carbon IV oxide during photosynthesis. In Nigeria, only a few policies have been put in place to promote tree planting. Therefore, more policies that promote tree planting in the country have to be adopted to reduce the accumulation of carbon Iv oxide in the atmosphere.

It has been shown that population control is vital in reducing the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This is because a large proportion of the greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere result from human activities. A study determining the relationship between the population and global warming found that 9411 metric tons of carbon IV oxide will be added by each child born in the United States in the next 20 years (Lutz, 2017). This shows there are huge potential savings in reduced reproduction compared to what can be achieved through lifestyle changes.

Conclusion

All in all, the rapid growth in the world’s population is strongly associated with an increase in the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which eventually leads to global warming. In recent years, there has been a rise in the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases such as carbon IV oxide, methane, and chlorofluorocarbons. These gases cause global warming by absorbing thermal infrared radiation. In Nigeria, the accumulation of these gases in the atmosphere is mainly caused by deforestation and the combustion of fossil fuels. Measures targeting these causes can help reduce the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
