Synthesis Paper on Research

Research is defined as careful consideration as regards a specific problem or concern by utilizing scientific methods. According to Bryman (2016), research has been described as the “systematic inquiry to describe, explain, predict, and control the observed phenomenon. Research involves inductive and deductive methods.”

In research, there are two kinds of methods, the first being inductive and the second being deductive. In inductive methods, an event is observed and analyzed. Verification of the observed event is done through deductive methods. Qualitative research is linked to inductive approaches, while quantitative methods are linked to the deductive approach (Gregory & Muntermann, 2011). Research is done to understand the evidence that the consumer of the information will need to embrace the concept or idea; the arguments needed for rooting the concept as viable; the processes needed in pursuing the idea; and finding out what the consumers of the information want to know (Crawford, 2019).

According to Bell, Bryman, and Harry (2018), research also has certain characteristics, and these include accuracy, which is among the most critical aspects that validate the research. I learned that research is only as good as its accuracy. A researcher cannot guess any parameters of the research or make assumptions about any parameter. Doing so automatically nullifies a research study as circumstantial and even false in its findings. Additionally, research must make use of all the data available, and this is what is used in creating new queries. The data collected must also be analyzed exhaustively so as to avoid any anomalies. Further, the data collected should be in real-time. Regulation and rules also need to be followed precisely, such as getting informed consent from participants and having the research approved by the ethics board. Failure to follow all regulations immediately criminalizes the research and can result in criminal charges raised against the researcher.

There are also different types of research, and these are quantitative, qualitative, problem-oriented, applied, and basic research (Cozby & Bates, 2012). The data is collected primarily to increase the researcher’s or consumer’s knowledge in basic research. Expanding knowledge is the main driver of this kind of research. An example that I have personally applied is when I search the internet for updates, accurate information, and progress regarding the COVID-19 situation in my hometown and the country. I use this information to keep myself on the know regarding the pandemic situation and to guide me in the next steps in staying safe.

Applied research focuses on analyzing and solving problems in real life. Scientific methods are used in studying and solving practical problems. An example would be the current status of the world scientists, with each looking to find a cure or vaccine for COVID-19. As the name suggests, problem-oriented research is born out of a problem, which drives a researcher to seek a solution.

Qualitative research is an inquiry process. This process helps create an understanding of problems in a deeper sense in their natural setting. The method is non-statistical and relies heavily on the researcher’s past experience as well as the questions that the researcher has in probing the study sample. Quantitative research, on the other hand, involves collecting data in a structured manner and analyzing it to come up with logical and provable conclusions. The research method utilizes statistical and computational processes in data collection and analysis.

Synthesis Paper Instructions

Reviewed for Spring B 2019

The purposes of this assignment are to:

  • Demonstrate proper use of current APA format in a term paper.
  • Demonstrate proper use of one of the research methods studied in this course—specifically, the case study.
  • Reflect on what you have learned in this course and write about it.
  • Reflect on the course content as critiqued from a biblical, Christian perspective and write about it.
  • Note: Thinking and reflecting on what you have learned will take a considerable amount of time. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time for this assignment.

Instructions: Using a case study approach, write a four to eight page research-based paper using yourself as the research subject by answering the assigned research questions:

  • What have you learned about research at an introductory level?
  • How do you evaluate or critique this from a biblical, Christian perspective?

These two questions above are not written as level one headings in APA formatting, however, a good way to organize your document would be to use these two ideas as appropriately written level one headings.  Add additional levels of headings as appropriate to organize your content.

You will use the APA skills that you honed during Module/Week 3, the case study skills you developed in Module/Week 5, and all the content you studied throughout all the modules/weeks of this course. Current APA format needs to be demonstrated in all aspects of this assignment. Proper APA formatting is required as part of the content of this assignment.

Your paper must include a properly-formatted title page, four to eight pages of content with correct APA formatting throughout, including proper citations and levels of headings, and a reference page. The title page and references page are in addition to the assigned four to eight pages of content. Maintain consistency between your citations and reference page. Your paper must include at least four references to sufficiently support your paper. Required references include your Introduction to Research textbook and the Publication Manual, and at least two additional scholarly references, plus whatever other content-related sources you would like to include. Remember, use current APA format throughout (including your title page, running head, author note, appropriate vocabulary and sentence structure, introductory statement, in-text citations, page numbers, levels of headings throughout the document, a conclusion statement, and consistency between your in-text citations and references).

You may use your Discussion Board Forum posts and additional personal reflection. Your answer will be unlike anyone else’s, and that is what is expected. Be sure to consult your Publication Manual for proper formatting for your in-text citations and references for these other sources.

Your assignment will be checked for plagiarism.

Note: Some matching on the SafeAssign report is not unexpected. You will be citing sources that others may have used in other papers, so some matches might appear. Your instructor will be able to discern what is appropriate matching due to properly cited sources. This assignment is open-book/open-notes, open-Bible, open to discussion with friends, etc. Be sure to document your sources appropriately as in-text citations and as references when you use the textbook or other material from this course, personal interviews with friends, etc.

This assignment requires that you incorporate proper APA formatting throughout the document. Formatting errors will result in point deductions.

This assignment is due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of Module/Week 7.
