Sociology on Racial Assumptions

Tiger Woods’ emphasis on his mixed racial background is likely to attract varied assumptions from different groups of people. To begin with, a police officer is likely to make an assumption of Woods’ race as a black person. To a police officer, Tiger Woods will likely be assumed to be an athlete or college professor owing to his calm and collected nature. The police officer may also assume that Tiger Woods is a threat to peace in situations where Tiger would appear dressed in golf caps. The likely assumption by a black person of Tiger Woods will be that of entitlement or beneficiary of the white supremacist background. A black person will assume that Tiger Woods is a product of a rich upbringing owing to his entitlement and conduct as an individual.

An Asian person will be apprehensive about Tiger Woods. To begin with, Tiger Woods does not show any semblance of Asian natives, which may inform the assertion that he is black. Most Asian racial prejudices against black communities disfavor those with distinctly black traits (Perez & Hirschman, 2009). As such, Asians will categorize or assume Tiger Woods to be a mixture of black and white races. The Asian may also make an assumption of Woods’ career in sports, arts, or entertainment.

A white person may make the assumption that Tiger Woods may be a criminal element or a product of a broken marriage. The existence of racism in the United States puts African Americans or mixed races to be lesser endowed, which disposes them to vile activities such as crime (Grusky, 2019). Additionally, a white person may assume Tiger Woods’ lack of education and may despise them for their racial nonconformity. An American Indian, on the other hand, may assume Tiger Woods to be a normal person living in a normal society that is mixed. American Indians encounter racial discrimination, putting them in one category with black, Latino, and Muslim communities in the United States
