Mental Health

Communities, institutions, social services, schools, workplaces, and families are prospective resources to support health. The World Health Organization defines health as a state of total social, mental, and physical well-being and not just the absence of infirmity or sickness (Castillo et al., 2019). Community-based and multi-sector mental healthcare approaches can be of particular help in addressing social and health inequities by promoting social well-being as well as addressing the structural determinants of mental health. During the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been increased health anxiety, which according to Vigo et al. (2020), has had harmful results on the mental health of individuals worldwide. Having community-based resources to help educate and support mental health among individuals can help enhance the general well-being of members, particularly during the pandemic. In my community, Miami Gardens, Florida, there are various community-based resources to support mental health, and this paper will discuss the various benefits and services offered by some of the available organizations.

The Pediatric & Family, Health and Wellness Center is a federally qualified health center that offers various preventive health services from skilled doctors in Miami Gardens. In 2012, the Center for Family & Child Enrichment expanded to include a health care center. The mental health services offered include an anger management group, a seeking safety group, a medication management group, individual therapy, social skills group, targeted case management, family therapy, and psychiatric services. Mental health alters the manner in which individuals act, feel and think and can also determine the manner in which individuals handle stress, make choices and relate to other people (The Pediatric & Family Health and Wellness Center, 2017). Since mental health is crucial at every stage of life, from childhood through adolescence and adulthood, the center offers services to individuals at every stage. The children’s mental health clinic, as well as outpatient mental health treatment practitioners, usually serve children from the age of 3 and above. The center operates daily except on Sundays.

The Pediatric & Family, Health and Wellness Center offer services to clients irrespective of their ability to pay. The fees are usually attuned on a sliding scale based on an individual’s gross household income as well as household size. The payment amount is then calculated using federal guidelines, and therefore if one is uninsured or has a high deductible from the insurance provider, then one may qualify for a discounted fee for the services. The total household income needs to be at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level for one to qualify (The Pediatric & Family Health and Wellness Center, 2017). The criteria for eligibility involves any individual with social, psychological, or emotional problems. The application process involves booking an appointment in which one fills out a form comprising of the email address, the type of service needed, phone number, and whether or not one has insurance, as well as whether one is a current or a new patient. The information on transportation has not been included.

Live Well Therapy Group (LWTG) is another resource center available to community members in Miami. The LWTG is a private group practice that has extensive experience working with families, couples, adults, adolescents, and children. Various services are offered to individuals with substance use, relationship issues, and depression. Other services offered include anger management, men’s issues, infidelity, women’s issues, and grief, among others. Other mental health services offered include elderly person disorders, thinking disorders, mood disorders, impulse control disorders, and personality disorders, among others. The types of therapy offered include coaching, person-centered, marital or family, and cognitive-behavioral, among others. The group believes in the confidence, support, and hope that a therapeutic relationship can offer. Anyone going through a rough time or exploring new ideas is eligible to seek therapy since this has interim support with long-lasting benefits. The qualification for accessing these services only involves having a mental health problem and living in Florida.

The group offers individual and high-quality services to clients from every culture, and the therapists try to help one determine areas that could benefit from therapeutic interventions. However, the group focuses on individuals of African-American ethnicity and also works with individuals of all ages, ranging from 0 to 65 years and above (LWTG, 2020). Some of the benefits guaranteed include enabling individuals to recognize their strengths in order to make it possible to lead a more fulfilling life. Through therapy, clients are able to have the opportunity to find happiness, growth, and balance in life. The cost per therapy session ranges from $40 to $150, and there is a sliding scale (LWTG, 2020). There are various insurance plans such as Medicare, Medicaid, Aetna, AvMed, and PscyCare, among others, and the payment methods are also varied, including Visa, MasterCard, and American Express, among others. The application process can be done through online booking. Information on transportation has been omitted.

Lastly, the Jackson Community Mental Health Center, founded in 2003, is a joint commission-accredited, multi-service, and community-based organization offering comprehensive substance and behavioral-related healthcare services for children and adults in the northwestern and north sections Miami-Dade County (Jackson Health System, 2021). The JSMHC aims to build the community’s health by offering a single, high standard of quality care for the community members. Various services are offered to individuals of all cultures and ages, and these services are meant to meet the needs of the whole family. Some of the services offered include detoxification and crisis stabilization services, group and individual therapy, case management, adult, adolescent, and child behavioral health as well as substance-related services. The services offered by this organization are free, given that it is a non-profit agency. The services offered are only in-person, and eligibility criteria include any adult or child with a mental health problem. The age criterion has not been specified. This group also does not have information on transportation availability.

Providing care support and care for individuals with mental issues involves different support organizations and individuals, including psychiatric nurses, general practitioners, psychologists, or any other community care providers. Research has shown that most service users remain highly mystified by the care planning and the process of review, with a noteworthy proportion not able to comprehend their care plans, not feeling involved in setting goals and writing the care plans, or not receiving written copies of the care plan (Coffey et al., 2019). The three resources at Miami Gardens are strategically located and have highly qualified individuals who can ensure a well-integrated and inclusive plan of care for individuals with mental problems. The population at Miami Gardens is relatively small, and this could make it easy to integrate support groups for individuals with mental problems. The mental health professionals will be able to generate a comprehensive treatment plan that is particularly designed to meet the needs of the patients and give directions towards healing and growth. Once the client chooses the kind of resource to use, a plan of care can be structured to meet the goals and needs of the client. The mental health professionals will need to use their skills to make it possible for the client to identify the best objectives and goals for the unique conditions.

Vulnerable populations comprise patients who are ethnic or racial minorities, underinsured, socioeconomically disadvantaged, children, LGBTQ, or those with particular medication conditions. Some of the advantages for vulnerable populations in seeking these resources include easy accessibility, affordability of care for some of the resources, and culturally-competent care. Since the population at Miami Gardens is majorly composed of African Americans who are among the minority population in the US, the resources are culturally competent and could be suitable for the vulnerable population, particularly for people of color. Furthermore, there are various discount options for the uninsured or underinsured, and therefore the vulnerable population can easily access these resources. However, some of the resources, like the Live Well Therapy Group, can be quite expensive for individuals from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Furthermore, there is the possibility of stigma and discrimination against members of LGBTQ, given that none of the resources has mentioned services for them. Generally, research shows that community mental health services are more effective in the treatment of mental problems, particularly when these services are integrated into primary care (Wainberg et al., 2017). Therefore, the mental health resources at Miami Gardens are expected to help various individuals in the region due to the ease of access and affordability.
