What is the definition of premature ovarian failure?

Premature Ovarian Failure (POF) is described as the loss of ovaries’ functioning before a woman reaches the age of 40 years. The three most commonly cited diagnosis for POF is hypoestrogenism, hypergonadotropis, and amenorrhea. When a genetic dysfunction causes the condition, then it may be referred to as gonadal dysgenesis (Chapman, Cree, & Shelling, 2015).

On average, what is the length of a normal menstrual cycle?

The menstrual cycle is the sequence of events describing a woman’s body as it prepares for pregnancy every month. The cycle commences on the first day that a woman has her period. An average cycle lasts for 28 days. However, some women experience a 21-day cycle, while others can go on for as long as 35 days (Reed & Carr, 2018).

A deficit in which hormone can lead to heavy menstrual bleeding and hot flashes?

Menorrhagia is a term used to define abnormally prolonged or heavy menstrual bleeding. In a normal menstrual cycle, there is a fine balance between estrogen and progesterone that ensures the endometrium is regulated as it sheds during menses. When there is a hormonal imbalance, the endometrium is excessively developed, which is eventually shed as heavy bleeding during menses (Kulkarni, 2015). In a normal menstrual cycle, an egg is released, which, in turn, stimulates the production of progesterone. When no egg is released, there is insufficient progesterone, which results in heavy menstrual bleeding. Lower progesterone levels also cause hot flashes and irritability in women (Taraborrelli, 2015).

What laboratory abnormalities would you anticipate, given her menopausal symptoms?

According to Jankowska, K. (2017), the following results are bound to be observed in Premature Ovarian Failure (POF):

  1. Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) test: FSH levels will be high, and a repeat test after a month will show high levels as well
  2. Luteinizing hormone test: LH levels will be high, proving the follicles are dysfunctional.
  3. Estrogen test:Estrogen levels will be low because of failure by the ovaries to function properly.
  4. Karyotypetest: This test analyzes all 46 chromosomes. Genetic abnormalities will be revealed in this test.
  5. Pelvic ultrasound: This will show multiple or enlarged

She reports that she has become much more irritable and moody prior to the onset of her menses, and is experiencing hot flashes and night sweats that wake her up two to three times a night.
