Drinking and Drug Use Among Young Adults.

The target population is young adults. This population consists of people aged between 25 years and 35 years. This population is mostly involved in drinking and drug use. Binge drinking refers to heavy episodic alcohol consumption. Drug use refers to the use of drugs for psychotropic purposes rather than medical purposes. The drugs can be classified based on their effects. Depressants reduce the activity of the brain and create relaxation. Stimulants increase the activity of the brain and enhance wakefulness. Hallucinogens alter the perception of reality and create auditory and visual disturbances. Inhalants are taken by huffing. Drugs that are consumed frequently by this population include amphetamine, cocaine, barbiturates, opium, morphine, heroin and tobacco, Lysergic acid diethylamide, and methamphetamine.

The prevalence of alcohol consumption and binge drinking is higher in younger adults compared to the other age groups. According to Grucza et al. (2019), approximately 80% of young adults in the United States of America consumed alcohol in the past year, 2018. The consumption is higher among men than females. Approximately 74% of all young adult males drink alcohol compared to 65% of females (Grucza et al., 2019). Based on ethnicity, alcohol consumption is lowest in Asian Americans at 60% and highest in Whites at 77% (Grucza et al., 2019). Binge drinking is highest in young adults aged between 20 to 28 years. Drinking leads to the development of alcohol abuse and dependence.

Alcohol abuse is a maladaptive drinking pattern that makes a person fail to fulfill his or her obligations and engage in a potentially hazardous situation such as drunk- driving. Alcohol dependence refers to a strong craving for alcohol and continued use despite many problems being experienced after the consumption. A person can either be physically or psychologically dependent. The criteria for alcohol dependence also include withdrawal, tolerance, and impaired control over alcohol use.

Young adults are the biggest abusers of prescription opioid pain relievers, stimulants, and benzodiazepines. Approximately 1 in 14 young adults use hallucinogens, 1in 17 young adults use cocaine, 1 in 18 young adults misuse opioids, 1 in 22 young adults misuse prescription benzodiazepines, 1 in 125 young adults use methamphetamine, and 1 in 200 young adults use heroin (Peacock et al., 2018). Approximately 43% of young adults reported the use of marijuana over the past year. Out of the 43%, 1 in 5 young adults reported having used vaping, during which heated oil of marijuana is inhaled through a vaporizing device (Peacock et al., 2018). The increase in the prevalence of young adults using Lysergic acid diethylamide (L.S.D.), cocaine, and other hallucinogens is attributed to the evolution of perceived risks. The perceived risk of L.S.D. has decreased, while that of heroin has increased.

It is important to address the problem of drinking and drug use among young adults. This is because it negatively impacts the social and economic sectors. Drinking and drug use can lead to addiction and dependence. Such a population is characterized by reporting late to work, absenteeism, and diminished interest and focus in their duties. This lowers the productivity of young adults, a population that is key to the nation’s future prosperity (N.O.T., 2020). Alcohol and drug addicts find it difficult to manage their financial expenses. A significant proportion of their income is channeled to the purchase of drugs. This can lead to an increase in the cases of poverty and the emergence of an irresponsible generation.

The other problem is a decrease in the quality of life. The quality of life of family members is reduced by violence, increased crime rate, and offensive behavior that results from alcohol and drug abuse (Peacock et al., 2018). Family members spend a lot of money to cater to the health-related problems that result from alcohol and drug use. This creates a financial burden on the family, especially those of low socioeconomic status. Therefore, it is important to address the health behavior of alcohol and drug use among young adults.

Drinking and drug use have various negative consequences on the health of an individual. Alcohol consumption predisposes a person to various diseases: liver cirrhosis, pancreatitis, and peptic ulcer disease (Rachdaoui & Sarkar, 2017). Furthermore, alcohol consumption by expectant mothers can lead to fetal alcohol syndrome. Fetal alcohol syndrome is characterized by physical deformities such as microcephaly, stunted growth, cleft lip, and deformities in joints, limbs, and fingers (Chudley & Longstaffe, 2017). Central nervous system problems resulting from fetal alcohol syndrome include poor memory, poor coordination and balance, and hyperactivity.

Hallucinogens such as Lysergic acid diethylamide and Phencyclidine have a variety of negative health effects. They include persistent psychosis characterized by visual disturbances, paranoia, and disorganized thinking, hypertension, nausea, anorexia, tachycardia, and excessive sweating (De Gregorio et al., 2020). Depressants include drugs such as benzodiazepines and barbiturates. Their health effects include bradycardia, hypotension, dizziness, dilation of pupils, disorientation, and fatigue (Grucza et al., 2019). Stimulants include amphetamines, cocaine, and methylphenidate. Their health effects include euphoria, hypertension, tachycardia, tremors, anxiety, nausea, and coma. All of these drugs: hallucinogens, stimulants, and depressants, can lead to death when taken in high quantities.

The prevalence of alcohol and drug use among young adults has increased over the past years. A significant increase has particularly been observed in Methamphetamine use among young adults. Drinking and drug use are associated with social, economic, and health problems. Therefore, addressing drinking and drug use among young adults is important.
