Factors Influencing the Development of Psychopathology

Biological factors such as neurophysiology, brain structure, and neurotransmitter levels contribute to the development of psychopathology. It has been shown that decreased levels of serotonin and increased levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are associated with impulsive violence and aggression (Mansell et al., 2015). Violent patients have also been found to have abnormalities in the brain structure in the temporal-frontal lobe. Besides, genetic factors have been implicated in the development of adolescent psychopathology. For instance, children born in families where both parents are schizophrenic are thrice at risk of developing schizophrenia when compared to children born in families where one parent is schizophrenic (Pingault et al., 2017).

Other than biological factors, psychological factors such as emotional, developmental, behavioral, and cognitive processes influence the development of psychopathology. Behaviors such as the abuse of drugs are associated with psychopathology. It has been shown that about 25% of patients who suffer from schizophrenia have a history of drug abuse (Kotan et al., 2016). Also, emotions are central to the development of psychopathology. The excess and absence of emotions and issues with negative and positive emotions are associated with the development of psychopathology.

Interpersonal relationships also play a significant role in the development of psychopathology. Several interpersonal disorders, such as social phobia, lead to the development of disorders such as anxiety. In addition, various social factors are associated with psychopathology. Traumatic and chronic stressors originating both inside and outside the family lead to the development of depression. Such stressors include chronic poverty, natural disasters, divorce, and family violence. These stressors predispose millions of children across the world to depression. Besides, cultural activities can lead to the development of various disorders. For instance, stigma arising from the gender roles women and men perform in society can lead to distress. The way different ethnic groups are treated in society also leads to depression and other mental disorders.
