Week 2 Discussion: Assessment for Health Promotion

There is no doubt that Maria is a busy mother, and several factors may contribute to her weight gain. To conduct an effective healthcare assessment, I believe it’s important to understand Maria’s cultural background, the Hispanic culture’s diet, and how they relate to her health. Familiarizing myself with her cultural background would be essential to establish the food she eats and the physical activities to recommend. Although Maria is a good cook, I would seek to establish the type of food she eats. Maria sleeps for five hours a day and does not complain about it. I fear the high intake of caffeine could be contributing to her problem. Besides, Maria is a busy mother who may not have enough time for leisure. It is also important to inquire whether Maria drinks alcoholic drinks and how often. In the assessment, I will ask about her family history concerning diabetes. There is a consensus that many health problems are genetically connected (Weber & Kelley, 2018). Looking at Maria’s health status, she is exposed to the risk of diabetes, sleep apnea, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases. The potential risk factors identified include the lack of enough physical exercise and her diet. Diet cola, for instance, is linked with T2D and cardiovascular diseases, although it has no calories.

Considering Maria’s actual and potential health risks, I would recommend physical activity and dietary interventions to promote her general well-being. Since Maria is a busy mother who does not have enough time for physical activities, I’d recommend 30 minutes of hula hooping every day to promote cardiovascular fitness, burn excess calories, and reduce body fat (McGill, Cambridge & Andersen, 2015). Eating a calorie-free and low-sugar diet will improve her blood sugar level and balance her blood pressure. Importantly, hula hooping is a known stress reliever. Most likely, stress accumulation may be responsible for her sleep apnea. Based on the information gathered, some of the nursing diagnoses for Maria include:

  1. Hyperglycemia is related to excess stress, rapid weight gain, and imbalanced diet intake
  2. Excess stress disorder related to sleep deprivation, weight gain, and elevated blood pressure
  3. Sleep apnea related to excess stress and caffeine intake

Responding to Ashley Murphy

Hello Ashley,

I really enjoyed reading your post. To deliver quality health care, it is crucially important to undertake holistic health assessments that reflect the patients and their environment (Weber & Kelley, 2018). I like your assessment of Maria’s case because it takes into account her whole life. In many instances, our daily schedules and cultural backgrounds are potential barriers to making healthy decisions. Maria is a busy mum who may not have enough time to undertake regular physical activities. Your proposed health promotion adequately responds to this concern. I am certain that educational programs on time management will help Maria create free time out of her busy schedule. Besides your proposed intervention, I believe Maria should take weekend strolls and play hula hoops at home. These activities promote physical fitness and reduce stress, promoting general wellness. I would love to comment on Hispanic culture and diet, but I have not researched enough on the topic.

Responding to Tyler Laporte

Hello Tyler,

Great post! Family history in health assessment is essential because, as Weber & Kelley (2018) noted, many health problems today are genetically connected to familial history. When I read Maria’s case, I was almost certain that her health status stems from her busy schedule and cultural background. However, I was not aware that Hispanic dishes are high in fat and sodium. Although the health promotion opportunity you’ve recommended is effective, I feel it may not be effective. Maria is a busy mum who may not have extra time for the gym. Would you recommend simple approaches like skipping rope, hula hooping, and strolling? How about advising Maria to cycle daily to work? Offering educational programs on healthy diet choices may be an excellent intervention since Maria claims to be a good cook. A balanced diet and enough physical activity would definitely promote her physical and psychological fitness, ultimately improving her whole-person wellness.

She complains of a 14-pound weight gain since starting school and is afraid of what this will do to both her appearance and health if the trend continues. After conducting her history, you learn that she is an excellent cook and she and her family love to eat foods that reflect their Hispanic heritage. She is married with two school-age children. She attends class a total of 15 hours per week, plus she must be present for 12 hours of labs and clinical. She maintains the household essentially by herself and does all the shopping, cooking, cleaning, and chauffeuring of the children. She states that she is lucky to get 5 hours of sleep per night, but that is okay with her. She drinks coffee all morning to “keep her going.” She lives 1 hour from campus and commutes each day, and often drinks diet cola to “stay awake.” When asked what she does to relax and de-stress, Maria states she “doesn’t even have time to think about that.”

Maria’s vitals today are as follows; T 98.6, R 20, HR 88, BP 148/90

Using the lesson and text as your guide, answer the following questions.

  1. What additional assessment data (subjective and/or objective) would you like to gather from Maria?
  2. What actual health concerns and risk factors have you identified?
  3. What are some opportunities to promote health and wellness for Maria?
  4. Write one nursing diagnosis for Maria (actual, wellness or risk), based on one of the health concerns or opportunities you have identified. (Please use one of the formulas outlined in the text and lesson!)
