Different learning styles must be incorporated into the initial plan to be effective and achieve the desired educational results. This means that effective health promotion must consider and factor in the learning styles of individuals taking part in or involved in the entire process, including care providers or patients. The VARK (visual, aural, read/write/ and kinesthetic theory) is one of the many tools that are used to measure and understand how people learn information. The four modalities were suggested by Fleming & Mills in 1992 to reflect the experiences of both teachers and students (Nilson, 2010). Therefore, the objective of this paper is to complete a VARK questionnaire and provide a summary of the preferred learning approaches, explain how personal learning styles impact the extent to which a learner can execute or understand education activities, and discuss why this is important in health promotion.

Summary Of My Learning Style According To The VARK Questionnaire And My Individual Preferred Learning Approach

The results of my online VARK questionnaire test are Visual (5), Aural (4), Read/Write (4), and Kinesthetic (3). But at a personal level, I prefer using a multimodal learning strategy, which integrates all four learning approaches, including visual, audio, read/write, and kinesthetic (VARK). Visually, I love and prefer to draw things, work with space, draw graphs, or do anything to do with interesting plans, layouts, maps, diagrams, or charts. I am more inclined to information (whether posters, slides, videos, or pictures) where the emphasis is primarily on the design. Aurally, I favor and fancy questioning, talking, discussion, and listening but not recalling. By and large, this means that I prefer to explain things to others by talking, suggesting my own point of view, listening to expert opinions and suggestions, and engaging in arguments, debates, and ‘in-depth’ discussions. Regarding reading and writing, I am more obsessed with the information presented in text, print, handouts, notes, or lists, regardless of whether it is on paper or digital media, such as PDF, Word document, PowerPoint, or a web page. Lastly, as a health professional, I am addicted to using trial and error, case studies, examples, experiences, practical exercises, as well as intuitive senses when making decisions.

After looking at my VARK questionnaire outcome, it is undoubtedly my individual multimodal learning strategy. Both strongly recommend visual, aural, and read/write strategies.

It is like the principle of ‘garbage in, garbage out’ applied in computer modeling, which literally means that ‘the quality of input determines the quality of output.’ Similarly, a learner who does not love using, for example, visual techniques such as charts, graphs, maps, diagrams, and layouts is likely to be challenged to apply these techniques in real-life situations.

Therefore, to improve the learning process and the ability of students to master the content being taught, it is paramount that educators identify these key individual learning styles, preferences, and inclinations. Good teachers, trainers, or facilitators know what type of learning model their students’ love and are willing to experiment with them. According to Guise et al. (2012), excellent health promoters or educators persistently attempt to tailor their training strategies to match these individual learning styles and preferences to increase the learning process. For example, an excellent educator or trainer can examine whether their trainees love reading books or written content and then use these findings to reduce or increase extensive reading and writing in their teaching approach. Recognizing the learning style adored by learners is the first step towards improving the learning experience and effectiveness.

Importance Of Understanding The Learning Styles Of An Individual In Health Promotion And How It Can Affect A Behavioral Change

During health care promotions, it is a prerequisite that trainers recognize and factor in the learning styles of individuals taking part in the activities to achieve the desired outcome. It determines whether the healthcare promotion will be beneficial to them or not, which will subsequently impact the implementation of the knowledge being taught in the field (Bastable et al., 2019). For example, suppose the public, for instance, is not well educated and does not prefer and understand graphical or statistical figures. In that case, it will be pointless for healthcare promoters to try to reach out to them using these techniques. The best way is to use things like demonstrations, videos, posters, and so on, with depictions of things like mosquitoes, mosquito nets, pregnant women, and malaria drugs.

In addition, it is essential to note that learning styles can eventually evoke or induce a behavioral change if applied effectively and persistently. For example, if videos are constantly and effectively used in teaching new concepts and ideas, it is likely to improve people’s listening skills. This will make them more empathic, democratic, and ready to listen to the viewpoints of others. Finally, in healthcare promotion, it is necessary to accommodate all learning styles to improve the learning process. The best way of doing this is by integrating all the VARK elements in the training process, including visual styles, aural styles, reading/writing styles, as well as kinesthetic styles. The approach should be multimodal.
