The two competing needs in the healthcare facility that affect the cost of healthcare are striking a balance between available resources and patient numbers. Although the health facility can cater to at least 1000 patients daily, these numbers are hardly attained because many people opt not to seek medical help because of the high costs associated with care. With only a fifth of the expected number of patients visiting the facility, most of the resources are not being utilized. This translates into monetary losses for the organization.

Describe a relevant policy or practice in your organization that may influence your selected healthcare issue/stressor.

The invoicing system in the healthcare facility can be adjusted to charge patients rather than paying the physicians. This will allow the facility to offer direct discounts for patients, eliminating irregularities such as double charging for patients, and consequently lowering the cost of healthcare. This will potentially increase the number of patients that visit the facility. Cliff (2012) points out that utilizing technology can improve patient services.

Critique the policy for ethical considerations, and explain the policy’s strengths and challenges in promoting ethics.

One of the main ethical issues such a move would create is unemployment for physicians who will be required to resign to implement the new invoicing system. This forced resignation will most likely bring up legal battles that will again increase expenses for the organization. Additionally, for the physicians who retain their jobs, their morale may be affected as pay cuts will follow for each service they provide.

Recommend one or more policy or practice changes designed to balance the competing needs of resources, workers, and patients, while addressing any ethical shortcomings of the existing policies. Be specific and provide examples.

The introduction of a new healthcare system will allow for service delivery that is faster and which will eventually reduce service costs. Automatic discounts would be issued by the system, reducing care costs. Retrenching staff to pave the way for the proposed system will reduce expenditure costs even further. Once again, retrenchment poses an ethical challenge as utilitarianism demands that actions taken should benefit the greater good (Kilkauer, 2010). The greater good, in this case, is the patients, yet the healthcare facility staff needs their jobs for sustenance.
