Transcultural Nursing Society (TCNS)

Transcultural Nursing Society-Mission, Vision, Purpose, and Overall ‘Benefits’

The Transcultural Nursing Society was founded in the mid-1950s by Dr. Leininger Madeleine and other like-minded professionals and nurses committed to education, research, as well as practice to enhance transcultural awareness. Presently headquartered at Madonna University, Livonia, Michigan, TCNS began to roll out its programs officially in 1966. Its head office, also called ‘The Central Office’, consists of the Director of Operations, the Executive Director, and a temporary Secretary. This office, under the guidance of a Board of Trustees, is mandated to coordinate all the international activities of the organization, including organizing regional and annual seminars, coordinating partnership projects, running the Journal of Transcultural Nursing, as well as communicating with people outside and inside the association (Transcultural Nursing Society, n.d.).

TCNS is founded on transcultural nursing (TCN) nursing philosophy, a humanistic discipline meant to serve societies, communities, organizations, and individuals based on the context of culture. According to Miller et al. (2008), it supports human rights and social reforms. Transcultural nursing is, therefore, aimed at providing culturally competent care by considering cultural care values. The following are the mission, vision, and goals of TCNS as an association.

To promote the quality of culturally equitable, competent, and congruent healthcare to enhance the well-being and health of people globally.

TCNS attempts to offer nurses and other healthcare professionals a wide pool of knowledge founded on ensuring cultural competence in education, practice, administration, and research.

TCNS has four major objectives, including advancing cultural competence for nurses and other healthcare professionals globally, promoting the scholarship of the discipline, developing measures for advocating social reforms for culturally-competent healthcare, and encouraging a sound financial, non-profit organization (Transcultural Nursing Society, n.d.).

Overall, registered members can enjoy membership ‘perks,’ including certification (both basic and advanced), which the TCN Certification Commission oversees. Members also can develop their research skills by publishing their content in the association’s valuable academic resource- the Journal of TCN. Besides, members also get the exposure of meeting other health professionals from different countries during regional and annual conferences, giving them the experience of sharing and working with people from different cultural backgrounds. Finally, and most importantly, the association provides critical training and advocacy programs for members by teaching them how to handle patients/clients from different cultural backgrounds (Ryan, Carlton, & Ali, 2000).

How it is Importance for a TNS Nurse to Network and how the Organization Creates Networking Opportunities for Nurses

Professional networking is imperative for all nurses as it allows them to engage and get involved. For TNS, networking is important because it allows nurses to meet like-minded individuals harboring similar ambitions and struggles (Sagar, 2011). It not only allows them to learn how the profession is changing but also offers a huge opportunity for career advancement. For the Transcultural Nursing Society, these networking opportunities are mainly handed to members through the various regional and annual seminars. Since its inception, the association has sponsored several annual conferences that tackle myriad topics touching on contemporary practice and issues in transcultural nursing. At present, conferences are held in the U.S., UK, Spain, Finland, Canada, and the Netherlands. To make these meetings exciting, regional conferences are held by ‘chapters’ to address nurses’ special needs and interests. The organization also has a special blog (TCN Blog) that members can leverage to network and share experiences via the internet.

How the Organization Keeps Its Members Informed of Health Care Changes and Changes to Practice That Affect the Specialty Area

Besides providing networking opportunities, the Transcultural Nursing Society also understands the benefit of informing its members about new health adjustments and changes to practice that impact the transcultural nursing discipline. The organization does this through its blog, the main website, Journal, as well as conferences (Transcultural Nursing Society, n.d.). New changes in practice are usually researched and published in its Journal. These findings can also be printed on the organization’s blog. However, the organization’s activities or schedules, such as upcoming seminars, examinations, and so on, are usually printed on the organization’s main website as well as its social media accounts, such as Facebook or Twitter.

Opportunities for Continuing Education and Professional Development

Similar to other global and regional associations, such as the U.S.’ Association for American Nurses (ANA), the Transcultural Nursing Society offers a wide window of opportunities for continuing education and professional development. In particular, the society runs a certification program (including oral examination and multiple-choice question tests) in Transcultural Nursing, which was launched in 1987. Today, the institution offers both Basic and Advanced Certifications. Several universities in the U.S., Canada, and a few European countries presently offer different TCN courses. For example, UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) now offers diversity in Health and Illness programs to both doctoral and master’s students. Besides certification, annual and regional seminars also provide members an opportunity to learn new things as well as advance their careers.
