Professional Goals Critical To Guiding My Career And Transitioning A Practicing NP

Professional Goals Critical To Guiding My Career And Transitioning A Practicing NP

Sample Answer

Professional Goals Critical To Guiding My Career And Transitioning A Practicing NP

Transitioning and switching from a registered nurse to a nurse practitioner is never easy (Barnes, 2015). Besides factors such as formal NP orientation and prior RN experience, nurses must establish SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-specific) goals to ease to increase their probability of meeting or exceeding the expected career goals (Massachusetts Institute of Technology Human Resources, n.d.). Therefore, in this paper, I will identify three short-term and three long-term professional goals, explain how each is related to my professional career development, and create a strategic plan that elaborates on how I might achieve each of these goals.

Short-Term Goals (1-2 Years)

The first goal is to enroll in a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program within the next 1-2 years after quitting my registered nurse (RN) position. The second goal is to develop and improve my personal skills and talents (like leadership, communication, and problem-solving) critical to the NP role within the next 1-2 years after enrolling in the MSN program. The third goal is to acquire professional nurse practice skills (diagnosis, medication prescription, treatment, preventive care) within the first 1-2 years after enrolling for my MSN.

Long-Term Goals (3-5 Years)

My first long-term goal is to secure an NP job (either as a pediatric, geriatric,  family nurse practitioner, or women’s health NP) within 2 years after completing my Master’s of Science in nursing training. My second long-term goal is to receive formal and structured orientations in the third year after securing my first job. The third long-term goal is to transition effectively from an RN to an NP and adapt to my new role within the 4-5 year by applying talents and professional skills learned during the MSN program.

Why Each Goal Was Selected And How It Relates To My Professional Career Development

The first, second, and third short-term goals were selected because an MSN program is the recommended advanced course for an NP. Personal skills and talents (like effective communication, problem-solving, and leadership) are vital for nurse practitioners, and professional skills (diagnosis, treatment, prevention) are crucial in providing quality care in the field, respectively (MGH Institute of Health Professionals, n.d.). On the other hand, the first, second, and third long-term goals were selected because securing an NP job is the ultimate goal of enrolling for an MSN. Orientation can assist in the smooth transition from an RN to an NP, and the application of the acquired professional and personal skills is crucial in the field of practice, respectively. All these aspects relate to my professional career development because they shape and influence the entire process, from training, acquiring the right skills, orientation, integration, and application of the acquired skills in the hospital, clinic, private practice, health maintenance organization, or any healthcare setting.

Strategic Plan: How To Achieve Each Of These Goals

Selecting the right MSN program and college before enrolling, developing, and practicing critical thinking as well as effective communication, and selecting the right list of units for the selected MSN program can assist me in achieving the first, second, and third short-term goals. On the other hand, choosing a job that excites me and meets my skill set, listing specific expectations early enough, and communicating effectively during the orientation process can assist me in meeting my long-term goals.
