Promoting Health and Wellness of Culturally-Diverse Populations

Promoting Health and Wellness of Culturally-Diverse Populations – Association of Clinicians for the Underserved

The term’ cultural diversity’ stretches beyond the ethnic background and nationality of individuals to include elements such as moral codes, political views, economic status, language, age, and religion (Jacobsen, 2019). In the U.S. and other regions of the globe, cultural diversity is one of the major problems impacting the health and well-being of certain populations, especially those considered minorities or marginalized, such as African Americans (Blais & Hayes, 2016). For that reason, several non-governmental agencies, especially in the U.S., have been established to try to provide education as well as resource support (in terms of money) to address some of the health disparities certain minority groups are facing in a culturally-diverse society. In that regard, this paper will specifically explore the role of the Association of Clinicians for the Underserved in addressing the health needs of the underserved population in America (the target population).

The Association of Clinicians for the Underserved (ACU) is a national not-for-profit institution that specifically focuses on providing support to clinicians and strengthening the delivery of healthcare for the underserved population or those individuals that are inadequately provided with medical services and facilities. In America, several studies have shown that most African Americans fall under the bracket of Medically Underserved Populations (UAPs), perhaps because a large percentage of them lack higher education and, thus, do not have access to better jobs and higher salaries. Because of its low-income rates, a large percentage of this population does not have access to healthcare services (including quality care services) and cannot afford to live in fully-equipped houses and secure neighborhoods. Despite the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, systematic inequality and other factors have negatively affected healthcare access among African Americans, with the rate of uninsured standing at 9.7 percent in 2018 (Taylor, 2019).

Therefore, the ACU was specifically founded to improve healthcare outcomes of underserved individuals by supporting clinicians, expanding healthcare access, boosting the quality of care, and building a culturally competent and skilled workforce. One of the quality improvement initiatives includes developing strategies to improve healthcare conditions with noticeable disparities, such as chronic diseases, asthma, and oral health. Also, the ACU is focusing on revising existing or developing fresh patient education resources to address the particular needs of individuals with limited English proficiency and other literacy skills. Besides, the organization has been targeting to enhance the quality of care among underserved populations by continuing professional training opportunities for clinicians. In terms of improving comprehensive access to care, the ACU is increasing education and advocacy efforts to increase awareness among underserved populations. Furthermore, the ACU is strengthening and supporting the healthcare workforce via employee development activities, which include training lay health promoters and advisors and incorporating them into the healthcare system. The organization has also launched the ‘Strength for Serving’ program, which uses health information technology to recognize the inherent cultural issues in workplaces with limited health resources.

Finally, the ACU is actively collaborating and working hand-in-hand through partnerships with several care institutions (both government and non-government) to foster its objective of promoting the health outcomes of underserved Americans. Some of these organizations include Partnership for Medicaid, Coalition for Health Funding, Trust for America’s Health, National Health Equity Coalition, STOP Obesity Alliance, as well as the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs.
