Ketogenic Diet

Joshi, Shivam. (2019) 8 Reasons to Forget Keto and Go Vegan. VegNews. Retrieved from https://vegnews.com/2019/6/8-reasons-to-forget-keto-and-go-vegan

Joshi, a lifestyle physician, and nephrologist in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, discusses significant evidence that losing weight by eating fewer calories does not have to involve semi-starvation. The researcher associates the ketogenic diet with several lifestyle-related diseases, including cardiovascular diseases resulting from high cholesterol, increased mortality rate for individuals eating animal-based food, kidney stones, diabetes, and keto flu, which might entail dizziness, cramps, irritation, stomach upset, insomnia, constipation, and brain fog. However, the article also appreciates the fact that the ketogenic diet can be used to treat children with refractory epilepsy despite increased cholesterol levels among these patients, as well. Therefore, the study reaches the conclusion that the ketogenic diet is not good.

Clemens, Z., Tóth, C., & Schimmer, M. (2018, January). Complete Cessation of Recurrent Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN) by the Paleolithic Ketogenic Diet: A Case Report. Journal of Cancer Research and Treatment, 6(1), 1-5. Doi: 10.12691/jcrt-6-1-1

The authors from the University of Pécs Neurology Clinic and the International Center for Medical Nutritional Intervention realized that very few case studies associating ketogenetic diet with cancer management exist, despite suggestive studies on animals and cellular research. In their findings in a case report, the researchers presented evidence that the Paleolithic ketogenic diet can be used to manage cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), a condition of cervical cancer. In their conclusion, while inferring from other studies and the original theory of Warburg, the researchers indicated that, as opposed to the classical ketogenic diets, the Paleolithic ketogenic diet is safe and effective in managing CIN while avoiding hysterectomy as the standard treatment for the condition. This study will help determine the contradicting research to my thesis, which considers the ketogenic diet bad.

Bala, S., Gayathri, R., & Priya, V. (2018). Evaluation of effects of ketogenic diet among gym trainers and users. Drug Invention Today, 10(6), 929-931.

The researchers from the Department of Biochemistry at the Saveetha Dental College sought to establish the effect of the ketogenic diet among gym trainers and users. Most gyms prescribe a diet to trainees to facilitate weight loss. In their findings, the researchers established that while most people knew about the ketogenic diet, a significant majority were unaware of the composition. They also noticed that the diet led to drastic weight loss. However, in the long run, the diet worked against this assumption of reducing weight; instead, the users gained weight. A significant disadvantage, according to this study, is the fact that most of the users developed renal complications. The information from this article will be important in my study to understand that despite the advantages of drastic weight loss, prolonged practice of the keto diet might lead to renal complications and gaining weight in the long run.

McEwen, B., & Fenasse, R. (2019, March). The ketogenic diet: A brief report. Journal of the Australian Traditional-Medicine Society, 25(1).

This peer-reviewed article discusses the benefits and potential cautions of using the keto diet concerning specific health conditions, including weight loss, epilepsy, and cardiometabolic profile among different patients. The authors established that the keto diet had recently gained popularity, and many physicians are adopting this diet to manage different health conditions. Despite the significant success of the diet, certain limitations have been associated with the composition, which puts the users at certain risks. Some limitations include headaches, weakness, constipation, muscle pains, and blood pressure changes. This article relates to popular information gathered on social media outlets, blogs, and trends adopted by celebrities, which inform the popular opinion of my study.

Mosek, A., Natour, H., Neufeld, M., Shiff, Y., & Vaisman, N. (2009, January). Ketogenic diet treatment in adults with refractory epilepsy: A prospective pilot study. Science Direct, 18(1), 30-33. doi:10.1016/j.seizure.2008.06.001

Owing to their vast experience with neurology, epilepsy, dietetics, clinical nutrition, and the practice of medicine, the authors of this article conducted research into the treatment of refractory epilepsy among adults using a keto diet. While most previous studies and the basis of the use of the keto diet have been widely implemented among children, little limitations have been documented on the management of epilepsy in adults using this method. In a small sample of adults (eight), only two adults completed the study of 12 weeks. The patients that opted out of the study at 4 and 8 weeks did not report any significant effect. However, the two patients suggested that there could be some benefits associated with the keto diet. Adherence to keto diet protocol is very difficult, thereby making this method for managing a very insignificant method for the management of epilepsy in adults. Despite the advantages of the diet, it is not feasible among adult patients. This information would be important in my study to prove that instead of the keto diet, it would be important to seek alternative treatment and management of epilepsy, especially among adult patients.
