Importance of Nursing Education and Overall Educational Goals

Nursing education is one of the few areas that have been thought to improve healthcare delivery in general. In 2010, the Institute of Medicine printed a critical report titled The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, which significantly examines the nursing practice while offering crucial lessons on the interaction between nursing education and other aspects of nursing. Some of the areas explored include the changing, diverse health needs of patient populations and the actions/decisions of nurses. This paper will primarily explore the essence of nursing education and the general educational goals based on a personal perspective.

My Options In The Job Market Based On Educational Level

As a holder of an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) presently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), I have a wide range of options in the job market in the future. Firstly, I can serve as a registered nurse (RN) in different hospital departments based on specialization, including intensive care, pediatrics, and many others. In addition to serving as a registered nurse, I can also work as an ADN clinical nurse specialist and can help in the oncology, pediatrics, or critical care departments. Based on the specific governing state law, I can have the mandate to perform extra tasks like prescribe drugs. In addition, I can play a more advanced role later with my BSN as a nurse educator, especially in a nursing diploma program. Most importantly, I can serve as a public health nurse, primarily taking care of the entire populations as opposed to individual patients

Professional Certification and Advanced Degrees I want to Pursue, Their Timelines, and the Reasons for Attaining this Education

Based on the IOM’s Future of Nursing Recommendations for achieving higher levels of education, I intend to pursue several professional certifications and advanced degrees for several reasons. Firstly, after my BSN program, I plan to continue a Master of Science Degree in Nursing (MSN) program, which will take me between two and three years. The main reason for pursuing this educational pathway is to advance my nursing skills, occupy higher jobs, and increase my salary. This program will allow me to fill several advanced administrative positions, give me an opportunity to teach in BSN programs, direct patient care, as well as to conduct research and informatics. I can serve as a clinical educator, clinical nurse education, health policy consultant, nurse manager, public health nurse, research assistant, and many other advanced roles (Institute of Medicine, 2010).

After my MSN, I would also like to pursue a Doctor of Nursing Science Degree (DNS) and a Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D.), which will likely take between 3 and 5 years. Some of the reasons for pursuing this route are to prepare me for scholarly and scientific research. This will prepare me for specialized advanced nursing practice, which focuses significantly on evidence-based and innovative techniques. DNS and Ph.D., which are the highest level of education, can potentially allow me to serve as a Nurse Practitioner (NP), Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), or Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM).

How increasing my Level of Education would affect my Competitiveness in the Current Job Market and My Role in the Future Nursing

Just as the IOM advocates, expanding my level of education would positively influence my competitiveness in the current job market. Firstly, with higher educational achievement, I would be able to meet the skill requirements of most healthcare institutions, which are based on their patient needs. This means that I would be able to match the expertise, knowledge, experience, and certification needs, such as leadership skills, public health, system improvements, health policy, as well as evidence-based practice. I will have the versatile skills to multitask in the hospital, depending on the areas that require my assistance. For example, I will be able to provide primary care assistance and manage chronic diseases for the aging population when called upon to prevent rising cases of acute disorders. Progressing through the highest level of education, Ph.D. or DNS, also means that I will fit into different departments comfortably. I can serve as Nurse Practitioner (NP), Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), or Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM). This means that I can compete in every job category.

Thereby, I have a more significant role to play in the future nursing profession. Firstly, I aim to improve the competencies and expertise needed to practice in different care settings. This implies that I must be an all-around nurse by being knowledgeable in all sectors, whether health policy, geriatrics, public health, research, evidence-based practice, or systems improvement. This will allow me to make crucial decisions related to the care of frailer patients as well as operate with more sophisticated, life-saving machines and technology.

The Relationship of Continuing Nursing Education to Competency, Attitudes, Knowledge, and the ANA Scope and Standards for Practice and Code of Ethics

A more profound and healthy relationship exists between continuing nursing education to competency, attitudes, knowledge, and the ANA Scope and Standards for Practice and Code of Ethics. All these ongoing activities and organizations serve the purpose of streamlining and standardizing patient care as well as ensuring that nurse professionals meet all the training criteria and knowledge needed to guarantee patient safety (American Nurse Today, 2014). For example, the American Nurses Association (ANA) scope and standards of practice are commanding statements that stipulate or guide the professional conduct of nurses. Whereas they are not prescriptive or do not state how to execute particular functions or tasks, these scope and standards act as guidelines for conducting them. On the other hand, the Code of Ethics provides a direction on how nurses should be professionally and morally. For example, to practice with integrity and competently, nurses must be able to uphold certain moral principles, including confidentiality, non-maleficence, beneficence, fairness, and autonomy (Epstein & Turner, 2015). Both the Code of Ethics and ANA’s Scope and Standards of practice ensure that nurses are competent and possess the right attitude and knowledge to carry out nursing activities.

Why Continuing Nursing Education should be Mandatory

Regardless of whether humans hold different opinions and perspectives, human rights and autonomy must be respected. I believe stakeholders must make continuing nursing education mandatory. I have several reasons why I think nursing education, specifically and not any other profession, should be compulsory. The most important reason is that, unlike other careers, nursing is a matter of life and death and is continually evolving. Therefore, nurses must continuously upgrade their education to keep up with rising technologies, diseases, and trends in the medical field. Today, for instance, new nursing techniques are steadily replacing the traditional ones, meaning that nurses must keep up-to-the-minute with these innovations and developments to offer quality care as well as stay on par with other professionals. This is critical because nurses must collaborate with physicians, laboratory technologies, pharmacists, and other care providers to offer integrated care. They must be knowledgeable and well-informed to collaborate.
