Social learning theory suggests that observation and modeling play a critical role in the learning and development of a child (Reed et al., 2010). My personal belief is that this is a more solid theory on how and why people behave as they do, whether as adults, youth, or children. For example, girls learn how to do and carry out ‘feminine’ roles by observing their mothers or mother figures in the capacities of being mothers and wives. A girl will develop a definition of a mother and wife based on observing their own mothers. The same is true for boys and their fathers or father figures (Reed et al., 2010). In our current global village, this is becoming more apparent as social media influences how people behave and what is deemed as right and fitting. Icons dictate what people, both young and old, should do, eat, wear, etc. The ‘likes’ and ‘following’ culture created by social media influence how a person makes decisions. If an icon has many followers, the followers will observe, learn, and imitate their icon in order to fit in the ‘society’ (Pelling & White, 2009; Park et al., 2009, Ahn, 2011). However, it is not always the case that an observed behavior results in a change in one’s behavior; rather, the information is coded to serve as a future guide in taking action. The theory I am least connected to is that of Freud on Psychosexual theory. I not only view it as flawed in its reducing human development to mere sexuality but also in the fact that he worked with troubled adults to create a theory on child development, yet, he had never worked with children (Kline, 2013). I think that Freud could have been a troubled child and probably a troubled adult who possibly had sexual problems and was obsessed with the same. His conclusion that all stages of development are linked to sexual desire is too simplistic and skewed.
