Leadership Advanced registered nurses are mainly involved in clinical leadership as nurse leaders and nurse managers (O’Rourke & Higuchi, 2016). They also provide mentorship for novice and student nurses. Nurse educators serve as leaders in academic institutions as faculty members and in clinical settings. Their leadership roles include role modeling for students, graduate nurses, and novice nurses, providing a vision for the nursing profession, facilitating learning and challenging the system, and serving as agents of change in the nursing profession (O’Rourke & Higuchi, 2016). The leadership roles of Advanced registered nurses are medium-level due to their predominant clinical orientation. Nurse educators provide system-wide leadership due to the visionary and change-oriented nature of their roles.
Public Health Advanced registered nurses are involved in all three levels of prevention. In primary prevention, they participate in health protection through immunization programs, point-of-care-based health education, and health promotion activities such as health screening (Stanhope & Jeanette, 2016). Nurse educators participate in primary prevention by offering community health education to populations about particular illnesses, mainly communicable diseases of public health significance. Nurse educators also conduct a learning needs assessment, evaluate educational issues, and design, implement and evaluate educational programs (Stanhope & Jeanette, 2016). Both specialties participate in primary prevention. However, while advanced registered nurses are involved in all levels of prevention and all three facets of primary prevention, nurse educators mainly indulge in the health education facet of primary prevention.
Health Care Administration Advanced registered nurses serve medium-level administrative roles in the clinical setting, in clinics and pharmaceutical companies as chief nursing officers, nurse supervisors, team leaders, and health information nurse specialists (Eriksson & Nåden, 2018).

Informatics Informatics for the advanced practice nurse relates to the utilization of technology to optimize patient safety, improve the quality of care by bringing evidence to the point of care, and maximize savings. Advanced registered nurses also apply informatics in the integration of client data into health information and coordination of care across settings (Westra et al., 2015). Nurse educators include online informational strategies in learning programs and curricula as a core competency for student nurses and on-job training programs for practicing nurses to enhance computer literacy and evidence-based nursing (Westra et al., 2015). Informatics in both specialties aims at improving patient outcomes (safety and quality of care). Nurse educators impart informatics competencies to Advanced Registered Nurses, who in turn apply the competency in appraising, synthesizing, and translating evidence.
Business/Finance Advanced registered nurses also have various financial management roles in the clinical setting, including the basic structure of accounting, corporate management and accounting, and the basics and analysis of financial statements (Wonjung & LimPhD, 2015). It is a core competency of nursing educators to be able to manage financial resources. As curriculum developers, nurse educators are responsible for encouraging health financial literacy and financial management through education-based strategies (Wonjung & LimPhD, 2015). Although both specialties have financial management roles, the nurse educator has an advanced level of understanding of hospital accounting and a more advanced ability to analyze financial statements.
Specialty (e.g., Family, Acute Care) Advanced registered nurses can belong to one of four main specialties, namely certified nurse midwife (CNM), certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), clinical nurse specialist (CNS), and nurse practitioner (NP) (Swan et al., 2015). Nurse educators have as many specialties as there are specializations for registered nurses. The National League of Nursing recognizes specialties such as family health, cardiology, Adult Health, Psychiatric, and Mental Health, Maternal Health, Pediatrics, Community and Public Health, and Critical Care (Souter, 2016). Subspecialties in the two specialties seem to overlap, but because nurse educators are concerned with the theory and instructional dimension of the subspecialties, advanced registered nurses study the manifestations of diseases, diagnosis, and treatment.

The two specialties have different credentialing bodies, with NLN being the only body that provides certification for Nurse educators.
