Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim

Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim

Sample Answer

Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim

Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim

Just like any other for-profit or non-profit organization, the primary target of most healthcare facilities is to optimize their performance. In the past, this purpose was mainly summarized into a three-objective approach called the ‘Triple Aim,’ which focused on lowering healthcare costs, promoting patient experiences, and enhancing population health. However, in recent years, this technique has morphed and evolved into a ‘Quadruple Aim’ by incorporating a fourth objective that focuses on boosting the work-life balance of healthcare staff members. Today, each of these four elements is affected by decisions taken at the top management level. Most healthcare institutions have increasingly relied on evidence-based practices to inform and rationalize these decisions. There are several ways EBP is helping healthcare organizations reach the Quadruple Aim, including population health, patient experience, costs, and the work-life balance of care providers.

For example, evidence-based strategies play an essential part in improving patient experiences and patient satisfaction by creating a work environment that actively engages staff members as well as ensuring that patients receive quality experiences (Crabtree et al., 2016). Some of the few EBV tools that research has shown to have a positive effect on patient perceptions and experiences include Bedside Shift Reports, Hourly Rounding, as well as the AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, and Thank You) communication behavioral tool (Skaggs et al., 2018). The three strategies often incorporate an explanation of actions taking place during a patient’s visitation and the updates of the test results. In addition, Bedside Shift Reports and Hourly Rounding have been shown to boost patient safety.

In addition, EBP strategies are being increasingly used to monitor and improve the general population’s health. In recent years, the implementation of EBP approaches has ensured that the general population not only accesses higher quality and more information on successful disease prevention policies and programs but also utilizes it (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018). For example, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, empirical evidence has ensured that the public utilizes basic but proven strategies for preventing the spread of the airborne virus, including hand sanitization, social distancing, isolation, quarantine, and so on.

Also, EBP strategies are being increasingly utilized in healthcare to reduce the general cost of healthcare and implement policies that can significantly achieve the same course. For example, examining elements like opportunity, fixed, and variable costs have been shown to influence the overall cost of care a patient might incur. Finally, EBP strategies are being widely implemented to improve the work-life balance of healthcare providers. For instance, the use of a fellowship program (evidence-based practice strategy) among healthcare workers has been shown by Kim et al. (2016) to promote group cohesion as well as job satisfaction. The collaborative, regional program uses institution-matched mentors.

Question

Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim

Assignment Details.

Healthcare organizations continually seek to optimize healthcare performance. For years, this approach was a three-pronged one known as the Triple Aim, with efforts focused on improved population health, enhanced patient experience, and lower healthcare costs.

Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim

Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim

More recently, this approach has evolved to a Quadruple Aim by including a focus on improving the work life of healthcare providers. Each of these measures are impacted by decisions made at the organizational level, and organizations have increasingly turned to EBP to inform and justify these decisions.

To Prepare:

  • Read the articles by Sikka, Morath, & Leape (2015); Crabtree, Brennan, Davis, & Coyle (2016); and Kim et al. (2016) provided in the Resources.
  • Reflect on how EBP might impact (or not impact) the Quadruple Aim in healthcare.
  • Consider the impact that EBP may have on factors impacting these quadruple aim elements, such as preventable medical errors or healthcare delivery.

To Complete:

Write a brief analysis (no longer than 2 pages) of the connection between EBP and the Quadruple Aim.

Your analysis should address how EBP might (or might not) help reach the Quadruple Aim, including each of the four measures of:

  • Patient experience
  • Population health
  • Costs
  • Work life of healthcare providers
