Nursing Conceptual Model And Theory

Nursing Conceptual Model And Theory

A conceptual model or theoretical framework may be viewed as an early stage of the development of a theory and offers an orderly, unified, and coherent way of envisioning processes and events related to a discipline (Mock et al., 2007). A theory generally describes, understands, predicts, and explains a specific phenomenon (Alligood, 2013). The difference between models and theories in nursing is the amount of proof that is inherent in them based on how they are developed. Models are not viewed as proven, while theories are supported by several pieces of research.

One example of a nursing theory is Madeleine Leininger’s theory of Transcultural Nursing. According to Leininger, nursing has a key goal: to provide care that is in line with practices, beliefs, and values. Care is the unifying, distinctive, and dominant feature in nursing, and there can be no cure without expression of care, but there can be caring in tandem with curing. That said, the Transcultural Nursing theory asserts that nurses and healthcare practitioners should work towards an understanding of patient care as well as the lifestyles, health beliefs, and values of different cultures. These will form the basis of culture-specific care (Leininger & Farland, 2010). In nursing practice, nurses should always strive to respect the cultures of patients for optimal outcomes. For example, among Muslim communities, female patients can only be attended to by female nurses, while some Asian communities do not allow a woman to talk in the presence of men; hence, a female patient will be accompanied by a male relative who will explain to the doctor/nurse all that the patient needs (Attum & Shamoon, 2019; Chang et al., 2012). Additionally, nurses should be aware of gestures that could have contradictory meanings to a patient’s culture. As such, a nurse should use an interpreter to avoid miscommunication (Meuter et al., 2015).
