Judgment

Judgment

Sample Answer

Judgment

The title “judgment” invokes mixed reactions because it is a characteristic that I struggle with. In psychology, judgment is the process by which people form conclusions based on available information, thoughts, and experiences (Hastie & Dawes 45). Often people encounter information, which may not be complete, and they make judgments. The judgments that people make about something or another person affect how they react to the thing or person. Therefore, it is important to be careful not to make inaccurate judgments one may make in different situations.

The main reason the discussion on judgment is challenging is that it can affect one’s effectiveness when pursuing a career in psychology. My first thought when I saw the title judgment was related to its negative side. Although sometimes judgment can be positive, my mind was more inclined to think about its negative side. I saw the title and thought about how sometimes individuals judge others in situations that they are not morally supposed to and also instances that they are not supposed to make judgments at all. For example, if one is a therapist and they get a client who shares their issues, judgment can prevent them from helping the client in the right way. Poor judgment can cause one to treat a client wrongly, thus, affecting the delivery of therapeutic services. This is why it is important to fight the urge to make judgments about people regardless of how hard it may be. Perhaps if one learns to make the right judgments, this word will not invoke negative reactions.

Judgment

This discussion will discuss the topic of being non-judgmental. If you are going to work with clients in therapy situations, it is important to work from a place of non-judgment. You may disagree or even dislike someone’s actions, but if you cannot accept someone as a human being, you should not be working with that person. This concept is from the Humanistic School of Psychology, but it is taught in most schools. If you actually go on for your Master’s Degree, this should be a topic in a Basic Counseling class.
