Nurses are required to exhibit cultural desire hence getting to research and know about other cultures. Moreover, nurses cannot interact effectively with patients if they do not understand the patient’s way of life. Hence, they have to research and gain extensive knowledge of different cultures to enhance their patient interaction. The provider-patient relationship depends on effective interactions between the patient and the provider. The medical practitioner cannot instigate beneficial conversations if he or she is not able to understand the patient.

I have learned how to become a better nurse by engaging the cultural concept in my training. First, I gathered that cultural awareness is key because nurses interact with people from different walks of life. Also, nurses are expected to get closer to their patients, but they cannot do that if they cannot understand the patient. Thus, I learned the benefits of cultural awareness and how it can benefit my career in the long run. Secondly, I learned to be more tolerant of others and be more patient. I was exposed to different cultural backgrounds; thus, I learned that I still do not know many things. Moreover, there are many languages all over the world, and a patient may communicate in any language at any time. I learned in the course that nurses could win many patients over by being tolerant and patient. Additionally, I learned that exposure is a very important part of learning. Hence, I intend to dedicate much of my time to traveling and getting to know new people. I am certain that the exposure will allow me to interact with many cultures hence getting to know their way of life.

Sharifi, Adib-Hajbaghery & Najafi (2019) talk about the importance of cultural competence when it comes to nurses. The authors note that Campinha-Bacote’s cultural competency model helps nurses to become culturally competent. Nurses can go through cultural desire, awareness, knowledge, skill and also exposure. However, nurses must be interested before they embark on the journey to being culturally competent. Wall-Bassett et al. (2018) correlate that Campinha-Bacote’s cultural competency model help nurses and other medical practitioners improve patient relationships. In that, most nurses struggle to develop relationships with patients when they do not understand their cultures. The model helps them to know how to react and what to say.
