The rate of childhood obesity has gone up in the last few months following the COVID-19 lockdown measures put in place by the State government. Children and Teens who would otherwise be engaged in school activities and other time-committing work find that they have extra time on their hands. Although the Summer Break is often characterized by a peak in adolescent obesity and overweight cases, this year, the numbers have increased significantly (University at Buffalo June 2020). To combat the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the hospital will need to create a program that will map the teen populace in the area it serves, the feasibility of having a healthier lifestyle program that will be adopted by each family with teens or younger aged children, and which tracks their progress throughout the commencement of the program for 12 months, 24 months, and 36 months reporting period.

The costs will involve setting up information banners, flyers, and advertising on local media to create awareness. Other costs will be assimilated into the hospital’s day-to-day services as the hospital already provides free weight checking, blood pressure, blood glucose, and BMI services. The hospital will compensate the pediatric cardiologists and nutritionists for any additional services they may render. The project aims to avert a looming childhood obesity pandemic in the community.

Additionally, nurses, because of their frequent interactions with the local people, tend to know more people living in the area, their social lives, and their family members. These aspects are important in getting a buy-in from the target families (Alex et al., 2020). Nurses will be involved in pitching the program to patients, families, and the community. In designing the program, they will be pivotal in suggesting to the project team where and who to contact as possible participants of the program

What is your role as an advocate for your target population for this healthcare program? Do you have input into design decisions? How else do you impact design?

I have an input in the design decision and, more specifically, on the marketing of the program. My role as an advocate of the program is to ensure every guardian or parent to a child or a teen visiting the premises is informed about the program. I will also encourage them to participate in the same. Additionally, my colleagues and I will ensure that we have an information desk at the hospital’s reception area for all individuals who are coming in to see and hopefully seek information. Besides that, I shall ensure that the hospital assigns some volunteers working at the hospital to walk around the hospital handing out informational flyers. These, too, will be stationed at the local Mall on the weekends to hand out flyers and give brief information to those that will be interested in the program. 100% participation from all families that fall within the inclusion populace is preferred. Another way I am involved in the design is by creating a health progression card for the participants. The card will track how the participants are fairing in the program

What is the role of the nurse in healthcare program implementation? How does this role vary between the design and implementation of healthcare programs? Can you provide examples?

The nurses will ensure that the participants are followed-up as proposed earlier. They will also be ready to provide feedback to the participant and the hospital where necessary. The health record cards will be filled in by the nurses as well. The nurses will refer the participants to the necessary healthcare practitioner when additional medical attention is needed. This is different from design as design involves mapping the program while implementation requires making the plan a reality. An example of the design phase is creating a health card that will ensure it covers all the relevant areas where information will be needed. An example of implementation is enrolling participants and filling in the health cards to monitor and analyze the program’s successes or failures.

Who are the healthcare team members that you believe are most needed to implement a program? Can you explain why?

The members of the team that are needed in implementing the program are the Pediatric Chief of Staff, the Pediatric Unit, the Nurses, the HR, and the Marketing team. The Pediatric Chief of Staff will need to give consent for the implementation of the program. Also, their input will be invaluable as regards getting the local government to fund the program. The pediatric unit, as well as the pediatric nutritionist, will play a critical role in ensuring that participants can access them in case of any need to do so as regards negative or positive changes in their health status; tailoring individual diets for participants, and conducting regular health checks on the participants. The HR will be involved in the recruitment of volunteers and ensure there is no shortage of their services throughout the 3-year-long program. The marketing team will be in charge of the media advertising of the program.

Honey badgers are well-equipped to raid beehives but cannot always find them. However, these two honey-loving species have learned to collaborate on an effective means to meet their objectives.
