Application of Statistics in Health Care

Statistics is a versatile subject with multidisciplinary applications. Broadly, statistics is a subject that deals with the processes of gathering, analyzing, organizing, interpreting, and presenting information/data (Dodge, 2006). There are different methods and concepts associated with each statistical process. Ideally, the two major types of data are primary (data collected using first-hand techniques) and secondary (data gathered by a second party other than the user). Data can also be categorized into quantitative and qualitative. These unique types of data are usually used for different purposes, and their collection and analysis follow different pathways. For instance, primary data is usually collected using experiments, interviews, surveys, and questionnaires, while secondary data is retrieved from organizational records, government reports, census, and many others. All these statistical methods and techniques are today playing an important role in healthcare, supplying health providers and stakeholders with critical information of the general and specific target populations. Through health statistics, such as disease prevalence, mortality rates, birth rates, and many others, the government can plan effectively to address the healthcare needs of its population. Healthcare providers can also use statistical health trends to lay plans that can not only promote healthcare but also improve the quality and safety of the services delivered to specific populations, such as African Americans, the elderly, people with disabilities, children below five years, and many others. This paper, therefore, aims to explore the application of statistics in healthcare as well as organizations.

Application of Statistics in Healthcare

  1. Provision of quality care

One primary benefit of health statistics is its ability to promote quality of care in healthcare settings, such as hospitals, clinics, pediatric care facilities, and many others. The term ‘quality of care’ is mainly used to refer to the scale to which care services (offered by the government or private institutions to populations and people) can enhance the possibility of obtaining desired results and are in line with present professional skills (WHO, n.d.). Today, different organizations, such as the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality, are supplying secondary data, evidence, and information that are improving the treatment outcomes and efficacy, cost of care, as well as screening of specific populations. In addition, primary health statistical data obtained through research methods like interviews, surveys, and questionnaires can be used to improve the quality of care by providing better evidence-based practices and techniques (Kieft et al., 2014).

  1. Encouraging the provision of safe care

Apart from the quality of care, health statistics are also playing a fundamental role in improving the safety of patients. In clinics, hospitals, and other care settings, healthcare workers often monitor patients’ experiences to assess and improve their safety and well-being. Typically, this can be achieved by lowering clinical errors, medication blunders, and other miscalculations. In hospitals, the use of real-time statistics and data – such as prescription information, patient demographics, medication histories, disease prevalence by race, and many others – are today helping nurses and other medical employees reduce the occurrence of medication and prescription errors. Health statistics collected by the use of health information technologies, such as medical records, are presently playing a central role in improving patient safety (Alotaibi & Federico, 2017). Ideally, these tools boost the delivery of quality care, improve communication in healthcare settings, and lower errors.

  1. Health promotion

Besides just encouraging the achievement of patient safety and quality of care, health statistics are also playing a vital role in health promotion – which is the process of empowering populations and communities to take control of their health by taking precautionary measures aimed at lowering disability, preventing diseases, and stopping premature deaths. The use of health statistics is powerful when running these health campaigns because it creates a sense of trust and trust among the individuals being targeted (Kumar & Preetha, 2012). For example, when running a health promotion campaign (such as printing a flyer) to encourage young people to stop drug abuse in the U.S., using health statistics that indicate the affected population, their age groups, mortality rates, and the percentage of school dropouts from drug abuse can deter teenagers currently on drugs or those intending to abuse in the future.

  1. Leadership

Like any other organization, leadership is very important and guides employees toward achieving a common organizational goal by helping create unity, a sense of direction, and authority. Leaders are defined by their ability to make impromptu but accurate decisions, especially during crises. In healthcare settings, nurses, physicians, and other medical workers are often faced with the challenge of making life-saving decisions, especially during emergencies. Health statistics are some of the most reliable and efficient tools/resources guiding these decision-making processes (Gibson, 2017). For example, following the recent COVID-19 outbreak (which has no cure), healthcare workers have been relying on statistical data collected during the SARS virus and trying to extrapolate them to the new coronavirus.

Application of Statistical Knowledge to Organizations

In today’s tech-savvy world, the application of statistical knowledge is widespread and most health institutions, businesses, and private organizations are using it to promote health, improve patient safety, encourage the provision of quality care, and in decision-making. The CDC (n.d.) is one of the key healthcare organizations that use healthcare statistics to educate the public and inform key stakeholders in the healthcare structure, including policymakers, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Medicare/Medicaid program, and many others. As the country’s health protector, the CDC collects, analyzes, interprets, and publishes critical health information regarding key threats and diseases, from viral to bacterial diseases, including their risk factors, new trends, morbidity, mortality, available health resources, and so on.

Health statistics is a broad discipline that healthcare workers and organizations are employing to collect, analyze, interpret, and present health information/data in a reliable, timely, and comprehensible manner. The subject not only guides leaders to make informed medical decisions but also plays a central role in health promotion and the delivery of quality care. Most importantly, health statistics improve patient safety by supplying health information used by physicians, nurses, and healthcare workers during prescriptions, surgeries, and medical procedures
