How were they similar; how were they different?

In both types of interviews, the participants stated that they had changed their eating habits since the isolation period began. Most of the participants said that their income had changed and thus affected their eating habits. While some opted for healthier food options, there are those that had taken to comfort eating and adopted very poor eating habits. However, those that had adopted the latter kind of eating mentioned that they intended to switch back to healthier eating once the quarantine period is over.

Was it easier to interact virtually or face-to-face?

It was easier to interact face-to-face than virtually because participants were more open to discussing the issue of eating habits. The virtual participants tended to be ‘suspicious of my intentions,’ while others that I approached blatantly refused to participate with no reason given (those that did state that they had no time to be interviewed). As for face-to-face interactions, participants were willing to share their experiences outside of the questions asked. I believe that their willingness to participate had largely to do with my method of approaching them.

What were the challenges?

The main challenge I faced with face-to-face interviews was that the participants tended to ask too many questions, and the topic at hand sometimes would deviate from the main objective. Additionally, face-to-face interviews were challenging because some participants appeared to be looking for an ‘appropriate answer’ to give me. Through their facial expressions, I could not help but wonder if some of the answers given were truly reflective of the real situation. Instead, the answers appeared to be more of what the participants thought were the ‘right’ answers I was looking for. Virtual interviews were a challenge in the sense that participants were not as ready to participate willingly. Some of the participants were suspicious of the ‘real’ intention of the interview and refused to participate. Some that agreed to participate bailed out when asked about their income situation; I believe they thought that the information they availed would be used against them in one way or another.

What were the advantages of meeting face-to-face versus meeting virtually?

The advantages of meeting face-to-face were that I was able to read the unspoken messages. Facial and other body gestures allowed me to assess which participants were genuine with their answers and who were not. Another advantage was that the face-to-face participants added to the body of knowledge when they verbalized some aspects of eating habits they had attained. One such valuable piece of information was that some of the participants would experience bouts of depressive feelings. During these bouts, they would lose their appetite for food, go for 2-3 days without eating anything, and instead opt to drink water, juices, or hot beverages.

What were the disadvantages of each way?

As stated earlier, the main disadvantage of face-to-face interviews was the myriad of questions that participants asked, which resulted in the deviation from the main issue at hand. The main disadvantage of virtual interviews was the suspicious nature of the participants. This made it difficult to get people to take part in the virtual interview (Irvine, Drew, & Sainsbury, 2013).

How did the differences in the following seem to influence the nature of the responses: physical distance, anonymity, richness of communication, visual cues, time?

In face-to-face interviews, a lack of physical distance and a lack of anonymity gave the participants the confidence to take part in the interview. There was a richness in communication, and I was able to read the visual cues of the participants. However, face-to-face interviews took a long time to complete because of too many questions asked by participants. In virtual interviews, the physical distance and anonymity was the reason that some of the approached persons refused to participate. The communication was not as rich as I would have wanted, as some of the persons approached via mail failed to respond.

Conclusion

After conducting interviews using both the virtual and face-to-face methods, I came to the conclusion that, where possible, it is best to do a virtual interview. This is because these are less time-consuming and cheaper than the alternative. While face-to-face interviews tended to give more information, they deviated from the main issue at hand. However, for virtual interviews to be successful, a better introductory approach needs to be taken so as not to ‘discourage’ participants from taking part.
