Risk Factors for Heart Disease

Risk Factors for Heart Disease

Sample Answer

Risk Factors for Heart Disease

Heart problems refer to a set of conditions/diseases that affect the heart. They include heart failure, coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, plaque, atherosclerosis, hypertension, heart valve disease, and many others. According to Nix (2017), cardiovascular is the leading cause of mortality in the U.S., accounting for nearly 611,000 deaths annually. There are certain risk factors that a person cannot afford, especially the lipid risk factors, including taking diets rich in triglycerides, total cholesterol levels, and low levels of LDL and HDL. The other factors that an individual can control include a poor diet, cigarette smoking, hypertension, obesity, physical inactivity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and inflammatory markers. However, some risk factors are unavoidable, such as hereditary, age, sex, type 1 diabetes mellitus, family history of myocardial infarction, and microbulimia.

There is also a big difference between the control and management of risk factors, especially as relates to heart disease. Risk control refers to mitigating, moderating, or alleviating the risks by using the operational process. For example, vigorous and regular physical exercise can assist in controlling diabetes, obesity, and blood cholesterol levels – which are associated with heart diseases. On the other hand, risk management is the act of determining the risks and handling them. During risk management, every threat to disease development is assessed, and a choice is made to mitigate, avoid, transfer, share, or accept every risk. An example of a risk management process for heart disease can include a diagnosis of high cholesterol levels and the employment of a set of interventions to treat or address the identified risks, such as cardioprotective diets, increased physical activity, and so on.

Finally, Nix (2017) argues that one of the most appropriate ways of managing heart disease is to encourage people to make lifestyle changes. Healthcare providers or health institutions can encourage people to follow the set dietary guidelines (such as the Dietary Guidelines for Americans set by the AHA), ACC’s Lifestyle Management Guideline Recommendations, and many others. The American Heart Association (AHA), for example, provides directions on the types of physical and weight activities people can undertake, the foods they can focus on, the foods to consume in moderation and limit, as well as the general recommendations.
