Sample Answer

Differentiate Between Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice.

According to Polit and Beck (2018), the purpose of conducting research is to generate new knowledge or validate existing knowledge that is theory-based. Research studies involve scientific inquiry, which is systematic in answering specific research questions or testing a hypothesis using a rigorous or disciplined method. Besides investigating, exploring, or discovering, research also calls for understanding scientific philosophy. Research results should be valid and reliable; thus, scientific methods need to be used following sequential and orderly steps.

A research process commences with a compelling question on a specific phenomenon, such as what is known, the developed and reported evidence and the existing knowledge gap. The first part of the research investigation calls for a review of literature that is both comprehensive and systematic in answering the aforementioned areas. The identified gap in the literature offers the impetus for developing a particular research question and/or a hypothesis. A decision can then be made on the fundamental theory, which acts as a guide for studying and aiding the method type selection used in the phenomenon exploration. The two main methods of research are qualitative and quantitative. The quantitative type explores the relationship between a given variables’ set related to the phenomenon under study, while a qualitative study seeks to understand the variables’ deeper meaning.

Evidence-Based Practice (EBP), on the other hand, is different from nursing research because it is not about the validation or development of existing or new knowledge, respectively. The main goal of EBP is the use of the best available evidence for the decisions made in patient care. The majority of the best evidence is founded on research. However, EBP is more than the simple use of research; it also includes clinical expertise, patient values, and patient preferences. EBP considers that the best evidence may also come from experts and opinion leaders, even when definitive research results exist. EBP also involves innovation by finding and translating the best evidence into clinical practices.

The steps in the process of EBP include the cultivation of a spirit of inquiry; asking compelling clinical queries; collecting evidence that is most relevant and the best; integrating the evidence with patient preferences, values, and clinical expertise in making changes or decisions in practice; evaluation of the change or decision in practice; and dissemination of the EBP results.

Why Are They Both Required in the Profession of Nursing?

The research that is used in EBP can be categorized from the most to the least reliable as follows: randomized control trials; evidence from observational, case-cohort, and cohort studies; clinical experts’ opinions supported by committee reports, studies, or experiences; and personal experiences.

Melnyk, Gallagher-Ford, & Fineout-Overholt, (2016), point out that when EBP is included in nursing, it provides the nurses with scientific research that will allow for well-founded decisions to be made. Nurses remain updated through EBP regarding new medical protocols for caring for patients. Nurses search for documented interventions that align with their patients’ profiles, increasing their patients’ chances of recovery. Additionally, EBP assists nurses in evaluating nursing research so that they are able to understand the effectiveness and risks of treatments or diagnostic tests. Application of EBP allows patients to take proactive roles in their individual healthcare as patients can voice their concerns, share their preferences and values and give their opinions on how they would like to proceed.

Give an Example of a Nursing Research That Has Led to a Change in Practice

An example of nursing research is the nurse-driven medication reconciliation protocol conducted by Ruggiero, Smith, Copeland, and Boxer (2015). The researchers illustrated that the likelihood of medication-related error was lessened when patients are discharged from a medical-surgical unit after two RNs reviewed their discharge instructions and prescribed medications.
