Unit 16 Discussion – Reflection NU 632 (Infants, Children, and adolescents)

Unit 16 Discussion Post–Reflection

Undoubtedly, this course has laid a critical foundation for understanding the major components of pediatric care, ranging from care targeting infants, and children, to adolescents. Admittedly, I can attest that most of the unit objectives outlined during the first meeting have been satisfactorily met, and they bear a significant professional application in the future. For example, I feel objective one of the course will help me differentiate between abnormal and normal psychological changes, physical results, and cultural practices connected with the diagnosis of mental disorders and common diseases among adolescents, children, and infants. For example, the knowledge learned in this unit will help me to explain the relationship between culture and disease prevalence. As Rehm & Room (2017) noted, culture indeed impacts the occurrence and prevalence of diseases in all populations. Specifically, I will be able to explain why most African American kids are more prone to mental diseases than their white compatriots.

Most importantly, course objective two will be pivotal in the identification of the specific disease states and syndromes in different pediatric settings. For example, I will be able to tell that a child is suffering from ADHD if he/she exhibits symptoms like impulsivity (speaks without reasoning), hyperactivity (is constantly in motion), and inattention (daydreams or has difficulty paying attention). Thirdly, the lessons learned in unit three will allow me to effectively scrutinize, critique, question, and identify the most appropriate tools or approaches to manage specific pediatric conditions, such as asking whether and why a differential diagnosis, psychoanalysis, or pharmacotherapy is needed. For example, I will be able to question why a differential diagnosis should be used, and not any other method, to differentiate Anxiety & Substance Abuse from PTSD & Drug Abuse (Dulcan, 2015). Besides, the skills acquired in unit four will serve a central role in the planning and implementation of the identified therapeutic interventions, particularly with the objective of stabilizing the health of the child, infant, or adolescent.

Last but not least, the key takeaways in lesson five will aid me in identifying and perhaps influencing through lobbying, the local, state, and federal resources, as well as policies that impact the presence of medical care for adolescents, children, and infant populations. For example, I will likely use the skills acquired in this unit to examine how Medicaid for youngsters or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is issued, managed, and effective. More so, by understanding the logistics involved in such programs, I might be able to increase enrollment by addressing the entry barriers. Lastly, I will use the skills learned in unit six to improve my communication – which is an element critical to the decision-making process and delivery of quality care in pediatric environments. This unit will help, in particular, and has taught me that I must be able to choose my words keenly when dealing with employees and patients who are culturally different. I must also demonstrate high levels of gender and sexuality awareness when dealing with women and men or homosexuals to improve the effectiveness of care.
