Good leadership is critical to the success of an organization, especially in the healthcare settings, because it determines the efficiency at which information is passed down and implemented (Chi, Lan, & Dorigotov, 2012). However, some situations, such as the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis our facility is facing, require that the management gives each nurse the discretion to handle the situation as they deem appropriate – meaning that there are no clear-cut guidelines. At our facility, our resources have been overwhelmed by the virus, and several nurses (especially the new nurses, older staff members, and pregnant nurses) have voiced their concerns about the absence of personal protective equipment (PPE) as well as concerns about their safety and health. After sharing these concerns verbally with the facility’s CNO, her response was that we “handle the situation as you see fit.” In this paper, I intend to identify and reflect on the personal leadership and management skills that will help me to handle this situation, including my strengths and weaknesses, how to improve my personal leadership and management aptitude, and the theory applicable in this situation.

My Strengths and Weakness and Areas of Further Development

Personally, I think I have certain leadership and management strengths and weaknesses, which can positively and negatively impact how I handle this situation, respectively. In terms of strengths, I am a conscientious leader, meaning that I have a strong sense and ability to complete my work and perfectly. Secondly, I am visionary, responsive, and open to new experiences. This is a plus for me, especially following the direction of the CNO, because it allows me to try new things and technologies, considering that we have inadequate personal protective equipment. On the other hand, I am an introvert who does not care or empathize with others. I am also a very rigid person and difficult to work with. Because of this lack of agreeableness, I rarely cooperate or participate in team activities, and thus, less inspiring.

How to Enhance Personal Leadership and Management Capacity

Several things can help me to become a better leader. Firstly, I need to strive to become more extroverted, selfless, and caring towards others. This means I need to keep my ego in check by listening to what others offer. I also have to learn to put aside my self-interests and put forward the interests of the entire team. I must understand that the safety and welfare of the patients, the pregnant nurses, as well as new and old staff members come before my personal gains. Therefore, I must take precautions by avoiding making decisions that might jeopardize their health and safety. For example, I must learn to sanitize my hands after each visit to the quarantined patients to protect the health of these colleagues. Besides, I must work on my teamwork skills, empathy, motivational expertise, and adaptability skill set. I think becoming a team player will improve our efficiency in fighting the novel COVID-19.

Leadership and Management Theories

My personal reflection is based on transformational leadership and management theory. Transformational leadership is a model in which leaders are required to form a partnership or good working relationships with others to identify the required change, crafting a vision to control the change via motivation, and implement the change together with committed group members (Yoder-Wise, 2019). This leadership style reflects our current situation because the senior staff members (especially the CNO) have advised us to handle the COVID-19 situation based on what we see as fit. The objective of transformational leaders is to inspire or motivate others by linking the group member’s sense of self and identity with the organization’s collective identity. Some of the characteristics of transformational leaders range from extroversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, openness to experience, to neuroticism.
