Developmental Assessment and the School-Aged Child

Developmental Assessment and the School-Aged Child

Sample Answer

Developmental Assessment and the School-Aged Child

Compare the physical assessments among school-aged children. Describe how you would modify assessment techniques to match the age and developmental stage of the child.

According to Ahmad et al. (2016), a full physical examination ought to be performed on school-going children during their visit to the physician’s office. It is also a requirement for insurance billing. The exams are necessary for determining if the growth and development of a child are on track. A child’s progress can be closely followed as they progress from one stage to another. Development occurs in various aspects, including emotional, physical, and cognitive aspects. In humans, development is shown through the achievement of milestones and more so in young children; hence, when a health practitioner handles a child, it is critical for them to have additional information on the psychology of children’s development.

That said, physical assessments of various diversities should be performed on school-going children. Newman and Newman (2017) point out that these assessments include checking for aspects such as height and weight. Girls tend to grow faster in terms of height compared to boys. For children aged between 6-12 years, this increase in height is approximately 2 inches per annum. Children in this age category range in height from 45 inches to around 59 inches. Weight assessment is also very essential; children in this age group have a range of average weight of 46lbs and 88lbs. Additionally, children should gain between 4.5 lbs and 6.6 lbs within a year. Another area that needs to be monitored is the development of teeth. Children between the ages of 6-12 years develop permanent teeth even as they gradually lose their milk teeth. Thus, as mentioned earlier, it is necessary for a healthcare practitioner to possess knowledge of child development as assessment will rely heavily on the knowledge of expected growth. The assessment needs to be timed with expected growth and development goals to make conclusions on whether milestones are reached or not.

Choose a child between the ages of 5 and 12 years old. Identify the age of the child and describe the typical developmental stages of children at that age.

An 8-year-old child goes through a complex process of development. Some developmental processes a child will go through include language skills, where they realize the meaning and pronunciation of new vocabulary. A child at this age will have an enhanced mental ability and will be able to memorize more information, such as seasons, counting, and dates. Additionally, at eight years, a child will already have begun shedding their milk teeth, and new permanent teeth will begin to grow (Black et al., 2017).

At this age, a child will also have better-coordinating skills and can skip and jump without losing their balance too often. Emotional and social development will also be recognized at this age, with a child placing more value on peer acceptance and value groups. A child will also show their ability to share with others as well as corporate with them. This is best exemplified in their increased interest in playing games and being highly attracted to the same (Black et al., 2017).

At 8 years, a child has a nonchalant feeling concerning others of the opposite sex. The child will be more focused, instead, on fitting in with their peers and doing what is acceptable. One of the concerns that come with this age group is safety. This is because an 8-year-old will want to be more independent and will also be daring enough to try out new things. Thus, a child at this age will be more prone to falling or injuring themselves in one way or another as they try out and explore new things, which means they need more care (Black et al., 2017).

Applying developmental theory based on Erickson, Piaget, or Kohlberg; explain how you would developmentally assess the child. Include how you would offer explanations during the assessment, strategies you would use to gain cooperation, and potential findings from the assessment.

Developmental theories play an important role in assessing the growth of a child. The Erickson theory is one such theory. The theory has 8 well-defined stages of development and can help healthcare professionals understand a child’s developmental process. Using this theory, school-going children will be in the initiative versus guilt stage as well as in the industry versus inferiority stage (Cherry, 2018).

During preschool, a child will be in the initiative versus guilt stage. At this time, a child can initiate power and control among their peers during playtime. The measure of success at this stage is through assessing a child’s ability to lead. At the ages of 5 and 11 years, the child is at the industry versus inferiority stage. A child will experience a sense of pride for outstanding performances and will develop competencies as they do various things. The success of a child at this stage is assessed in their ability to gain competency in the things that they perform (Cherry, 2018).

In assessing the first category, the healthcare professional needs to give the child activities that the child will direct. The child needs to know that the success of the activity will depend on the way they direct it. The child will thus choose an activity and then repeat it as many times as they want, and this should be encouraged. Doing so will help the child to show initiative and also in taking responsibility (Dunkel & Harbke, 2017). In the second category, the child will be given instructions that they will need to follow. A child should reach their target and prove that they have learned something and not just engage themselves in an activity. This phase determines the level of productivity of a child in later life. Hence, the assessment of the child will be based on their ability to complete the project at the stipulated time and without offering excuses for failure to complete the said project (responsibility) (Dunkel & Harbke, 2017)
