Shortages of nursing staff and the turnover rate is a crisis not only in the US but in other countries. This crisis negatively affects healthcare quality and also threatens the nursing profession’s stability. In this study, the authors used a cross-sectional design, with 946 nurses participating from three different hospital levels (district, regional, and medical center). The hospitals’ levels were defined by the type of medical care they provide and the number of beds. The participants responded to four questionnaires in a self-report format. Authentic leadership was mediated by burnout and work environment as regards the nurses’ intent to leave. The authors showed that authentic leadership has an effect on nurses’ intention to leave. However, burnout and work environment are critical factors that influence the same. The authors suggested that authentic leadership practices should be adopted and efforts put into improving work environments and minimizing burnout. Doing so will minimize the nurses’ intentions to leave.

Further, perceived politics in an organization have a partial mediation impact on the relationship between job satisfaction and the type of leadership.
