According to Silva (2016), leadership can be defined as the ability of a person to inspire a group while motivating and guiding them to achieve organizational and personal goals. For an organization to be successful, it needs to ensure that it has the right leadership in place and in every possible department. The two types of leaders that are ideal for creating a successful organization are transformational leaders and servant leaders (Choudhry, Akhtar, & Zaheer, 2013). These types of leaders exhibit characteristics consistent with organizational goals and proper handling of staff. Some of these characteristics include using effective skills in communication, encouraging team member involvement and contribution in decision-making, setting realistic goals, and acting with integrity, among others.

As a nurse working in the oncology department, taking care of patients can become very stressful because of the frequent shortage of staff and the unique psychological toil that caring for cancer patients has on nurses working in oncology departments. However, the manager overseeing the department is the epitome of servant leadership. The manager has made it a habit to ‘check in’ with each nurse on duty to find out how each one of us is fairing. The manager has what she calls a ’10 minute date’ every day with each nurse on duty. During this ‘date,’ she allows a nurse to discuss how the day is going and asks the nurse to give solutions for challenges they are facing and to talk about any other issue they may be facing. The ‘dates’ have helped nurses to offload emotions and thoughts that could hinder them in performing their duties effectively. The manager is a good communicator, a good listener, and a good guide in helping nurses in resolving the challenges they face daily. This open channel of communication has resulted in enhanced creativity among nurses, greater job satisfaction, and a significantly low rate of nurse turnover (Sandhya & Kumar, 2011; Cloutier, Felusiak, Hill, et al., 2015).
