Professional Goals

  1. Identify at least three strengths
Explain why you consider these strengths and what you can do to maintain them in your practice

People and Communication Skills: To be successful in the nursing career, it is critical that one knows how to communicate effectively with their colleagues as well as with patients (Bramhall, 2014). I am especially conscious of the way that I communicate with my patients because I never want to miss out on any details in the information they give me. I have learned to be an active listener by re-wording statements made by patients to ensure that what they tell me is what I have heard. Repeating a statement made by a patient makes it clear that we are both on the same page. I also practice active listening with my colleagues. Interrupting a person while they talk will often time lead to misunderstandings. Additionally, I respect each person’s opinion and avoid, at all costs, imposing my personal sentiments on a person.

Compassion and Empathy are also critical in my career (Reynolds, 2017). Every patient deserves to have some compassion given to them. I am empathetic towards my patients, and oftentimes, I will find myself spending a little extra time after my shift is over just to sit down and talk to some inpatients. I have come to learn that some patients only need a listening ear to improve their mood and, consequently, their health outcomes.

Trustworthy and Honest (Dinc & Gastmans, 2012): I am not afraid to admit to my mistakes. Medical errors are among the leading causes of patient harm in hospitals (Andel et al, 2012). When a nurse does not admit to making a mistake, they do an injustice to the patient, themself, and the healthcare facility. Further, I am not hesitant to take necessary steps whenever I notice any of my colleagues making mistakes, especially the freshly graduated RNs. I believe that confronting and resolving mistakes promptly saves lives.

I intend to continue with these strengths as an NP through my team training. When I train those under me to have a similar set of strengths, then each will be another’s keeper. When a nursing unit has a workforce that shares the same values and strengths, then better service will be provided, and ultimately better patient outcomes will result.

  1. Identify at least three weaknesses
Explain how you plan to address each weakness

Poor time management: This is a major challenge for me, and I can attribute it to social media. The first thing I do before I sleep and when I wake up is to check my social media pages and respond to available messages. Afterward, I go ahead and respond to other people’s posts, etc. This takes as much as 1.5 hours every single morning and evening, not to mention during the day and inadvertently delays my day’s activities. I intend to limit this activity to my lunchtime break. My phone will be off during working hours, and I will respond to important messages only during the lunch break.

Wanting to do everything at once: Every day seems to be an overwhelming one for me. My to-do list never gets completed, which makes me feel awful at the end of each day. When I think of it, I tend to put activities on my list without allocating time to each activity. I will have to start writing my list with time allocations, and where I cannot fit everything into one day, I will commence with the most important activities.

Spending too much time on paperwork: I like to be detailed, and this means spending too much time writing patient notes. This affects my time, and I end up taking too long with one patient than I should. I will need to be more efficient and to do so; I will have to start using a digital transcription program.

  1. Examine at least three clinical skills you need to obtain prior to exiting the program
Explain how you plan to master the clinical skills before exiting the NP program

Leadership skills: I would like to better my skills as a leader because doing so will ensure that my team will run efficiently. To master this skill, I will take regular leadership self-assessment tests, and where I fall short, I will work at improving on the same. I will also need to attend several leadership training mini-courses to sharpen my strengths and improve on my weaknesses

Familiarize myself with the nursing practitioners’ scope of practice, consensus model, and work reimbursement. These will keep me updated on the terms of my professional license, and enable me to be aware of the changing landscape of the profession, both practice-wise and legal-wise.

Enhance my differential diagnosis skills. This will require that I expand my information sources. Besides reading medical journals on the researches, I will need to create time to watch medical drama series’. For every case presented in an episode, I will make a point to research further on the same. I believe this will make knowledge acquisition more interesting and easy to remember.

  1. Analyze the history of advanced practice nurses and the emerging role of your specialty area, and discuss what contributions you plan to make to advance the nursing profession

I intend to offer leadership in quality improvement in the healthcare facility I work (Naylor & Kurtzman, 2010). It’s my intention that the changes that I propose will be implemented in the care facility and replicated in other facilities in the country. The specific areas I would like to focus on are reducing patient hospital stay and re-hospitalization as well as patient care costs. This will impact on patient satisfaction and increase efficiency in service provision.
