The present opioid epidemic in the United States, as well as its harmful effects on society, needs to be contained and ameliorated through different strategies. In 2016, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), through its drug overdose department, indicated that about 2.1 million Americans had opioid use disorders associated with prescription opioids while 600,000 others had OUD associated with heroin and projected the figure to rise if measures are not taken to curb the epidemic (Singhal, Tien, and Hsia, 2016). The following is a teaching plan for opioid abusers as a vulnerable population.

Objectives of the Lesson: Sensitization – the goal of sensitization is in line with the aim of the Department of Health and Human Services, which is to improve access to prevention, treatment, and recovery support services to mitigate social, health, and economic consequences of opioid addiction (Peterson, Xu, Mikosz, Florence, and Mack, 2018). To foster long-term recovery, sensitization would attach patients to programs that promote support group strategies. The support groups aimed at reintegrating opioid abusers back into society by making them understand the consequences of their actions to themselves, their intimate others, and society.

In order to reduce the health risks of opioids, it is important to increase the number of providers who are willing to support the vulnerable population and improve both telehealth consultation and direct care approaches (Rubenstein et al. 2019). Additionally, it is very important to observe the Department of Health and Human Services five-point opioid strategy, which includes improving access to prevention, availability, and distribution of overdose-reversing drugs, strengthening public health data collection and reporting, supporting research on the topic, and advancing practice to improve the quality of health (Mark and Parish, 2019).

Lesson 4: Since drug abuse, including opioid abuse, is a public health concern, the consequences are far outreaching beyond the individual or their family but to the entire society. Therefore, it is important to understand how communities are affected by the actions of the individual and how society can respond to the problems arising from increased opioid abuse.
