M4-Discussion-Cultural Rituals

Sample Answer

M4-Discussion-Cultural Rituals

The Ugandan cultural rituals, practices, and beliefs of the period of pregnancy as compared to the rituals, practices, and beliefs of those within the United States.

A ritual is a symbolic, repetitive, and patterned enactment of cultural value or belief; its main purpose is to align an individual’s belief system and society (Davis-Floyd, 2017). In the US, no matter the length of labor, how easy or hard, most of the pregnant women are hooked to an IV and electronic fetal monitor. Women are encouraged to receive episiotomy, use a pain-relieving drug, and are soon separated from their newborn babies immediately after birth (West, 2011). Most pregnant women in the US are also given Pitocin, a synthetic hormone that speeds up labor and lies flat during their births when giving birth. Additionally, more than a third of children born in US hospitals are delivered by cesarean section. Some women in the US, including celebrity mothers, choose to give birth at home (Davis-Floyd, 2017). Some of the myths linked to the pregnancy period described by Selin & Stone (2009) include: having a lot of heartburn means a child will have lots of hair; running could cause labor to start early; spicy food accelerates labor; and severe morning sickness is an indication of a baby girl, among others.

In Uganda, childbearing is held in very high esteem. Women deliver while in a kneeling position and not supine (Bienempaka et al., 2014). A pregnant woman will deliver her baby on the bed and on the side where her husband normally sleeps. The placenta is given a formal burial as it is considered as important as another baby. Most women prefer home delivery as women trust traditional customs and practice more than the healthcare system. A pregnant woman ingests herbs and also inserts them virginally to cleanse her unborn child. A woman and her newborn baby must spend four days indoors. Further, the husband cannot have any sexual relations with another woman during the pregnancy period if in a polygamous marriage and should wait for one month after the delivery of the baby to have sexual relations with the new mother (Bienempaka et al., 2014).
