Your Bodys Response to Changing Conditions-Stress

For the body to function effectively, different organs and systems work together in perfect balance. Disruption of a single system can create problems in other parts of the body. The homeostasis process ensures a balance in the body’s organs and systems to facilitate efficient and effective function (Sherwood, 2015). There are two main systems that work together to facilitate homeostasis; the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the endocrine system. The ANS is a body system that regulates body functions such as digestion, respiratory rate, heart rate, and sexual attraction, among others (Jänig, 2008). On the other hand, the endocrine system releases the hormones needed to facilitate the functions of the ANS. These two functions are coordinated to maintain a balance in a body’s processes through homeostatic regulation.

The ANS works without voluntary control. It is primarily made of two main divisions; the parasympathetic nervous system and the sympathetic nervous system (Gordan, Gwathmey, & Xie, 2015). The sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for stress, while the parasympathetic nervous system is designed to react to stress and return the body to its normal state. These two systems complement each other to maintain an equilibrium of biological conditions. The role of the ANS is facilitated by its ability to respond to stimuli through the electronic messages transmitted throughout the body by neurons and neurotransmitters (Jänig, 2008).

The role of the ANS goes hand-in-hand with that of the endocrine system. The endocrine system comprises several glands that release the hormones required to facilitate the homeostatic process (Gordan, Gwathmey, & Xie, 2015). The activities of body cells are controlled by various hormones. Depending on the stimulus received as a result of the regulation done by the ANS, the endocrine system releases either more or less of a given hormone to regulate a condition.

For instance, in the regulation of temperature, the endocrine system, through the thyroid gland, releases the hormone thyroxine when there is a drop in temperature. Thyroxine is important for the body’s temperature-increasing activities (Jänig, 2008). For example, the sympathetic nervous system will be activated to facilitate changes like the formation of goosebumps. The hormone also increases the metabolic rate to generate more temperature.

While there is a distinction between neurotransmitters and hormones, it is possible for a substance to be a neurotransmitter but act as a hormone elsewhere in the body. There are several peptides that serve both as neurotransmitters and hormones (Sherwood, 2015). For example, oxytocin is a neurotransmitter that also acts as a hormone. This hormone and neurotransmitter are connected to human emotions.

In conclusion, homeostasis occurs as a result of communication and coordination between the functions of the ANS and the endocrine system. The ANS controls the neurotransmitters that translate information on a stimulus to facilitate change in the body. On the other hand, the endocrine system releases the hormones that facilitate the change to create a balance in the body’s functions.

Your Body’s Response to Changing Conditions (Stress)
How does the ANS and Endocrine System work together to maintain homeostasis in times of short-term and long-term stress? Is it true that neurotransmitters can act as hormones as well as stimulate the release of hormones? Give some examples.
