Sample Answer

For this discussion, you will be looking around in your daily life or maybe the news and finding something that you might think is abnormal.

Recently I came across a video of people walking through a glass walkway located in China. The walkway is located more than 4,000 ft. up a mountain, and people walk on it as an adventure. This walkway is meant to be thrilling because the tourists get to see the ground from such a high place. In this video I watched, the tourist was crying and unable to walk further out of fear that he would fall. I found this to be abnormal because, regardless of the view of the ground, one is already assured of the safety of the walkway before one get on it.

I think that this was a sign of height phobia. Height phobia is an irrational fear of heights. One may feel like they are going to fall even when there is no real danger (Kapfhammer Kapfhammer et al. 376). For instance, in this case, the tourist was afraid to continue the walk out of fear that they would fall from the glass, which has been specifically made to ensure that people do not fall. The inability to move is caused by anxiety, which is a result of irrational fear. In the same setting, there were other people who did not care about the height of the walkway. The rest of the people do not have height phobia, so they understand that there is no way that they can fall from the glass since it has been made specifically for people to walk on it. Without the fear of heights, one is able to think rationally and consider the real information concerning the situation. They cannot be afraid, knowing that they are protected by a strong enough glass.

Question

For this discussion, you will be looking around in your daily life or maybe the news and finding something that you might think is abnormal.

For this discussion, you will be looking around in your daily life or maybe the news and finding something that you might think is abnormal. Then, please read this week’s assigned readings found in the Reading Schedule and think about what criteria you are using to make this decision. Are you using just one aspect or looking at the whole picture?

You can also write about how in the past you might have seen something as abnormal, but now you understand it might just be a behavior that doesn’t occur very frequently or that you would need more information to about the person to decide if it was abnormal.

For instance, if you are using the criteria of something not occurring frequently, couldn’t you consider courteous driving during rush hour traffic to be abnormal behavior?

What about if you only use the criteria of personal suffering to determine abnormal behavior? If you only use that criterion there would also be a problem. There are some people suffering from mental illnesses who believe they have special gifts and are not suffering at all.

Be sure to take into account cultural differences. For instance, one time a woman in our shelter started to talk in a deep voice and said she was channeling a spirit. The next day, a staff person asked if she had multiple personalities (today called Dissociative Identity Disorder). Immediately, more experienced staff interjected that this was a common practice in our client’s culture. Her religion was Santeria. http://www.mojomoon.net/santeria.html
Although our client wasn’t free to make other residents participate in her channeling activities against their will, she was free to practice her religion. It would have been unethical and wrong to call her mentally unstable because of her religious and cultural practices.
