The Hispanic Challenge

The Hispanic Challenge

Sample Answer

The Hispanic Challenge

The first thing that stood out to me about the article was the caption that read that in 1998, the name Jose replaced the name Michael as the most popular newborn boy’s name in Texas and California. Nothing speaks louder than this fact about the persistence of the Mexicans to retain their culture and dominate wherever they settle. The US and Mexico are the only two countries in the world that border each other with extreme opposites on different levels, including economies, culture, language, and persuasion. It is rather ironic that Americans are expected to learn one other foreign language, and most of the time, Spanish is the default language they choose to speak. Yet the Hispanics instill in their children to speak Spanish fluently and nothing less. The Americans learn Spanish to communicate with the immigrants, while the immigrants do not feel compelled to do the same. In other words, a third-world country practically invades the superpower and makes the latter speak its language converting it into a two-language country. That is kind of comical to me.

Another thing that stood out to me is how major a role immigrants play in the US economy. If all the Mexicans moved out of the US, there would be a crisis of some sort. For starters, there would be a shortage of laborers in what Americans deem to be lowly jobs, and people would be forced to do some chores or pay highly for the same for fellow Americans to do the jobs left vacant (think of the Mexican housemaids and cleaners, who would do the jobs after they left?). The schools in California would experience a sudden plunge in student numbers leaving the schools nearly empty or even closed down. In other words, the US should wake up and realize that the Hispanic immigrant influx, which has steadily been growing over the years, will sooner rather than later, topple the scale of the governance structure of the nation as well as in the private sector in the realms of policies, politics, population, education, labor, and what is proudly an Anglo-American culture. In another century, the US may cease being a purely English entity and turned into a Hispanic-American nation.
