Sample Answer

Mr. Byrne can’t understand why scolding his seventh-grade students for disruptive classroom behaviors makes them more unruly.

Discipline is an important aspect of the life of a child for its development and success. Discipline should not always be thought of as a form of punishing a child. Positive reinforcement is encouraged through operant conditioning and can be applied in the classroom to get the students to behave well. Skinner’s theory of operant conditioning utilizes positive and negative reinforcements to encourage and deter good and negative behavior, respectively (McLeod, 2015). When the consequence of an action is positive, a person is likely to repeat the action, and when the consequence is bad, then such a person is likely to avoid the actions in the future. This process is what develops one’s behaviors and begins to understand what is useful and appropriate and what is not.

Mr. Byrne can use positive operant conditioning to reinforce good behavior among his students. One way he can achieve this is through praise (Henton & Iverson, 2012). When the teacher asks a question, and a student puts up his/her hand like they ought to, rather than shouting an answer, the teacher will pick the student to answer. If the answer is correct or wrong, the teacher will say encouraging words such as ‘Well done, that’s absolutely right, or ‘that is a great way of looking at the issue.’ The student will feel self-satisfaction and pride and will not be afraid to attempt to answer questions in the future. The teacher will manage to educate the students on the expected behaviors, and through this reinforcement, the students will feel impressed and determined to impress the teacher, which means a positive outcome for the students and the teacher.

Mr. Byrne should suppress the negative behavior by taking action (Henton et al., 2012). Whenever a student behaves inappropriately, the teacher should call the student by name, state the exact action that the student has done, state clearly that the action is wrong, and state clearly the punishment to be set for the specific action. For example: ‘Peter, you know you are not supposed to throw papers at John during class time. I will not allow such behavior in my class. As a punishment for this behavior, I expect you to collect all pieces of paper within the school compound today after the last lesson. If I inspect and find that you have left a single piece of paper, I will report your behavior to the principal for further action.’

Lastly, the teacher should use positive statements with the students as many times as possible. This is because positive reinforcement works in two ways; it will encourage positive behavior while suppressing negative behavior.
