How Physical Disability Affects Soldiers Outline

The population of people living with disabilities in the United States is significantly large. As of 2015, it was estimated that 40 million Americans were living with some disability. About 50% of these disabilities result from physical issues (Bialik, 2017). Although disability is a general problem that affects all demographics, it is particularly common among military veterans. Considering the nature of the work done by soldiers, it is common for them to sustain injuries that cause significant harm to the point where they are forced to live with physical disabilities, sometimes for their entire lives (CBS News, 2011). The well-being of disabled soldiers in the United States is significantly challenging. Several cultural and social issues make it significantly harder for them to cope with the adjustments they need to make after being disabled at war. This essay aims to examine the socio-cultural aspects of the daily lives of disabled soldiers that make their lives challenging.

Socio-Cultural Aspects of the Lives of Disabled Soldiers

The physical, mental, and social health of people with disabilities is significantly affected by numerous socio-cultural factors. These factors mainly affect this population’s access to resources, self-reliance, health, and interaction with people in their environment. The following is an evaluation of various socio-economic aspects of disabled soldiers’ environments that cause challenges in their lives.

Race and Ethnicity

The United States suffers from the problem of social inequality. There has been a proven disparity in the access to various social amenities between races and ethnic groups. Unfortunately, this disparity has also been in existence among the veteran communities, particularly in the access to veteran services associated with disability. The government offers disability resources for veterans living with disabilities. These resources are meant to help them to deal with the challenges associated with the disabilities they experience (Morin, 2011). However, these resources are not equally accessible to all demographics, with some races and ethnic groups, particularly African Americans, being disadvantaged.

Access to disability services is made according to a disability rating. Veterans with a higher disability rating have a higher chance of accessing more services (Garber et al., 2016). Arnold (2017) conducted a study with disabled veterans where they talked about their attitudes and experiences toward the disability rating. A majority of the African American participants felt that white veterans were more likely to receive a higher rating compared to minority races like African Americans. With the significantly lower disability rates for African American veterans, their access to government disability resources is limited.

Veterans are highly dependent on the assistance they get from the government to have a sustainable life after injury. When access to these resources is not equal, then it means that some disabled people, unfortunately, have some additional issues that make their self-reliance even harder. The disadvantaged groups experience some ‘double jeopardy’ when they struggle to adjust to a life of disability while at the same time being denied access to equal resources to live a comfortable life (Arnold, 2017). Such issues negatively affect the well-being of minority veterans negatively.

Religion

The lives of veterans living with disabilities are not only affected by the physical inconveniences caused by their disabilities but also by the impact of their life changes on their mental health. Mental health issues like depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and anxiety disorders are very common among people living with disabilities (American Psychological Association, n.d). Socio-cultural factors play a big role in disabled soldiers’ coping with such issues. One of those factors is religion.

Religious beliefs play a major role in improving soldiers’ coping mechanisms when experiencing the impact of being a part of the way. Having a belief system affects how a person copes with stress and life issues. Religion can help to enhance the acceptance and endurance of life issues, thus, enhancing resilience. Religious denominations such as Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam have ways of describing and finding meaning in suffering (Behere et al., 2013). Therefore, people who subscribe to such beliefs have a higher chance of being resilient and adjusting to a new life that would be conventionally viewed as suffering (Behere et al., 2013). Additionally, being a part of a religious group gives people a chance to gain the support they need to adjust to a new life change. Religion provides social cohesion by bringing people closer to family and friends, thus, giving them access to both physical and emotional assistance (Behere et al., 2013).

For soldiers living with disabilities, religion plays an important role in helping them to adjust and enhance their mental health. Aflakseir & Coleman (2009) studied how religious beliefs affected the coping strategies of disabled veterans who had served in the Iranian war. The study found that being a part of a given religion increased the positive mental health indicators. Soldiers who were religious believers were more likely to have lower levels of mental stress, demonstrated through depression, PTSD, and anxiety. For soldiers who are not religious, it can be harder to develop coping strategies that help them to adjust and live a good quality of life after serving in the military.

Marriage and Family

Soldiers living with a disability may also experience challenges adjusting to the social structures of marriage and family after their respective incidents in the military. Marriage and family structures are considered very important in America. Marriage, in particular, is emphasized as a very important institution in American culture. Conventionally, one is expected to find a life partner and build a life together to form a family. Nonetheless, the experienced is usually significantly different for male and female soldiers suffering from disabilities caused by injuries in the military.

Finding life partners is a major problem for people living with disabilities. People living with disabilities have the same sexual and relationship needs as people without any disabilities. However, discrimination against this population group in society makes it harder for people with disabilities to find life partners. These people find it harder to get supportive and loving partners because of the negative perspectives caused by stereotypes about people with disabilities. A common stereotype related to the sexuality of people with disabilities is that they do not get sexual attraction or that they are incapable of fulfilling sexual needs when involved in a relationship. Due to such stereotypes and discriminative behaviors in society, they have a hard time finding life partners. The inability to find partners can have a negative effect on the mental health of soldiers with disabilities. The realization that they will be unable to live their desired type of life due to their disabilities can cause mental stress that can lead to depression. Therefore, this social factor increases the chances of soldiers with disabilities experiencing psychological issues.

Additionally, the structure of the family can be significantly affected when soldiers get physical disabilities. Both male and female soldiers need to have the ability to take care of their families in order to feel fulfilled. In the following section of this paper, the discussion will demonstrate how disabilities in the military affect the employment and education prospects of people with disabilities. When soldiers experience difficulty in getting employment and advancing their education, their ability to be the breadwinners of their families is affected. As a result, the structure of their families is negatively impacted. This can also motivate the development of mental health issues due to the stress caused by the inability of a person to take care of their family because of a sudden disability caused by injury in the military.

Employment

Employment is the most common factor that is highly impacted by soldiers’ disabilities. The type of work that one can do is highly influenced by their physical abilities. Therefore, when a soldier experiences a physical issue that leads to disability, they are forced to reconsider their career choices. Additionally, getting employment for people with disabilities is generally an issue in society.

Oliver (2000) interviewed a military leader on issues that affect soldiers living with disabilities. The article discusses several issues affecting disabled soldiers, one of the main ones being employment. When a person is serving in the war, they need to be physically fit for the job. When they experience an issue that affects their physical abilities, it is inevitable for them to lose their position in the military. As a result, many soldiers are left unemployed when they experience issues affecting their physical abilities.

Getting employment opportunities in other areas is significantly difficult. The United States law cautions against any form of discrimination based on a person’s disability. However, some subtle forms of discrimination still take place in employment, making it hard for people with disabilities to get employed (Colella & Bruyère, 2011). For instance, some workplaces have not been adjusted to be suitable for people with disabilities. Additionally, the kinds of roles that disabled people can take over may be limited because of their physical limitations. Therefore, soldiers with disabilities can experience challenges finding other forms of employment after serving in the military.

Health and Social Care

The accessibility of health and social care services for veterans with disabilities is also a major issue causing challenges in their day-to-day lives. The government provides health and social care assistance to veterans in the United States. However, this assistance is never adequate for them to deal with the challenges associated with disability (Morin, 2011). Due to their disabilities, it is harder for them to make additional efforts to sustain their lives and have access to adequate health and social care. Thus, they are forced to rely on the limited contribution of the government to their lives.

Garber et al. (2016) found that veterans with disabilities experience significant physical and mental health issues, which they cannot deal effectively with because of the vulnerability caused by their disabilities. For instance, the study found that many disabled veterans do not have adequate access to healthcare services to treat chronic health issues such as diabetes, hepatitis, and lung problems. Additionally, mental health care was found to be less accessible to soldiers who were living with disabilities. Generally, soldiers with disabilities are at a disadvantage when it comes to access to health and social care. This disadvantage is mainly associated with their limited assistance and difficulty finding employment to sustain their well-being.

Conclusion

There is a significantly large number of soldiers or veterans in the United States who currently struggle with various forms of physical disabilities. Most of these disabilities are caused by injuries that they experience while serving the country at war. This study has demonstrated that having disabilities causes significant changes in the lives of soldiers. The physical disadvantage caused by disability exposes them to challenges in their day-to-day lives. These challenges are also enhanced by socio-cultural factors such as race and ethnicity, marriage and family, employment, and health and social care. These effects have also been seen to have an impact on the mental health of these soldiers. This is a special group that needs additional support to enhance their well-being.
